Irish down Georgia Tech to stay unbeaten

South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Jewell Loyd tallied 27 points as No. 2 Notre Dame kept its perfect record intact with an 87-72 decision over Georgia Tech at Purcell Pavilion.

Loyd finished 11-of-17 from the field and added nine rebounds in the triumph, the 739th of Fighting Irish head coach Muffet McGraw's career. McGraw moved into a tie with former Virginia bench boss Debbie Ryan for 10th place on the NCAA Division I career wins list.

Natalie Achonwa posted 21 points and 10 rebounds to help Notre Dame (25-0, 11-0 ACC) extend the best start in program history, with Kayla McBride contributing 12 points and eight assists.

Aaliyah Whiteside scored a career-high 21 points off the bench to pace Georgia Tech (17-9, 7-6). Tyaunna Marshall recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds in the loss, while Kaela Davis went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in a 15-point effort.

Sydney Wallace buried a pair of threes to lead the Yellow Jackets on a game- opening 8-2 run and Georgia Tech was up 10-6 seven minutes in, but Notre Dame got untracked by putting together a 16-5 flurry to move in front to stay. Michaela Mabrey netted five points during the surge, which staked the Irish to a 22-15 advantage with seven minutes left in the half.

Notre Dame held a 36-28 edge at intermission, then later extended the margin with a 10-2 spurt that resulted in a 51-35 lead with 16 minutes remaining.

Up 53-41 with 13 minutes to go, the Irish put the contest out of reach with an 11-3 run.
