Pitt remains unbeaten by pounding UMBC

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Sam Young had a game-high 19 points as the third-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers stomped the UMBC Retrievers, 91-56, at the Petersen Events Center.

DeJuan Blair scored 12 and grabbed eight rebounds for Pittsburgh (10-0), which started 10-0 for a sixth straight season with all 10 victories coming by at least 13 points.

Ashton Gibbs and Gilbert Brown notched 13 points apiece off the bench while Levance Fields had three of his four field goals come from beyond the arc for 11 points.

"I thought we played a very unselfish game tonight," Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said. "I thought that trend really continued all night, as we were unselfish and really moved the ball well."

The Panthers shot 55.4 percent from the field and got 40 points from their bench in the win as many of the starters were rested midway through the second half. The program is now 64-1 versus non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center.

Darryl Proctor had 13 points while Chaucey Gilliam notched 11 and six boards for the overmatched Retrievers (5-4), who took on a team from a major conference for the first time this season with lackluster results.

Matt Spadafora netted 10 points for UMBC, which has lost two of its last three overall.

"They are a very good basketball team," UMBC head coach Randy Monroe said. "But, we scored 56 points against them. I'm proud of our guys. They played as well as they could. They are the No. 3 team in the nation. I thought our effort was strong."

UMBC kept things close in the early going with Rich Flemming's jumper finding twine for a five-point game, 18-13, approaching the midway point of the first half. However, a field goal from Blair with a little over four minutes left gave Pitt a 31-17 lead and the Panthers held a 42-25 halftime advantage after a Fields three-pointer capped the half.

It was quickly a 25-point game less than five minutes into the second half as Blair's tip-in fell for a 57-32 lead. A 12-2 run by the Panthers through the middle of the half made it a 75-44 affair and Pitt cruised to victory from there.
