CHARLOTTE - Johnson C. Smith beat Shaw 82-63 Thursday night in the first round of the CIAA Tournament, ending the Bears' season at 12-15.
Johnson C. Smith (20-7) took a 39-27 halftime lead as Shaw struggled with mistakes in the first half. The Bears shot 44.4 percent from the free throw line and made 10-21 field goals for a showing of 47.6% for the half. Johnson C. Smith shot 65.2% from the free throw line and 50% in field goals.
Johnson C. Smith then went on a 15-3 run in the second half that pushed them out to a commanding lead.
Raheem Smith was the scoring leader for the Bears with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Will Graham added 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists as he rallied at the end of the game. Callwood and Travis Nelson both scored 7 points; Nelson added 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 blocks and Callwood added 2 blocked shots.
