LeVelle Moton was named head men’s basketball coach at N.C. Central Wednesday, the school announced.

Moton, a star shooting guard for the Eagles from 1992-96, returned as assistant men's basketball coach in July 2007.

Moton's appointment is a five-year term beginning April 1, with an annual salary of $100,000. He replaces Henry Dickerson, whose club had a 4-27 record last season.

"We are pleased that we were able to identify a new head coach from within the Eagle family," NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms said in a statement. "Coach Moton has a long-standing history with our basketball program and will continue to bring exceptional leadership in this role."

Moton joined the NCCU staff after serving as head coach at Sanderson High School and leading the Spartans to an overall record of 59-25.

A 1996 graduate of NCCU with a bachelor's degree in recreation administration, Moton became the school's third all-time leading scorer with 1,714 points during his historic hardwood career as an Eagle from 1992-96, earning the nickname "Poetry `n Moton."

While playing at NCCU, Moten was named the 1996 CIAA Player of the Year. He was inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.

Among NCCU's all-time career leaders, Moton ranks first in 3-point field goals made (213 of 529), third in scoring (1,714 points), fourth in free throws made (363 of 467), fifth in assists (278), eighth in field goals made (569 of 1,159), 10th in scoring average (16.6 points per game), and 11th in steals (110).

Moton is a 1992 graduate of Enloe High. He was born June 16, 1974 in Boston, but grew up in Raleigh.

This is not about Moton but everything about NCCU basketball.

This has nothing to do with Moton being a good persons but everything to do with returning NCCU basketball program back to respectability. Now i dont expect them to start beating Duke nor UNC nor State because NCCU dont take there sport seriously at all.

Sanderson High School's loss is NCCU's gain. Congratulations NCCU on getting a wonderful coach and human being. Looking forward to seeing what great things he will do with the basketball program there.

RE: N.C. Central names Moton men's basketball coach

I know a lot about NCCU basketball program as far back as the late 70 th up to today. NCCU has made another one of many of there mistakes by hiring Moton. Now i know him personally from his days attending NCCU & playing basketball against him. But my 1st choice would have been bring back Greg Jacksons who is about to lost his work at Delware St.. An my 2nd choice would have been another NCCU basketball player name Wayne Howell. Howell is a native of Durham & grow up around NCCU basketball all of his life. An plus he has more experience in coaching than Moton do.
