Greensboro, N.C. — Duke’s Nolan Smith has been selected as the ACC Player of the Week and North Carolina’s Kendall Marshall is the ACC Rookie of the Week following their out-standing performances.
Smith averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game in leading fifth-ranked Duke to wins over No. 20 North Carolina and Miami. The Upper Marlboro, Md., senior was 19-of-37 (.514) from the field on the week, including 5-of-10 (.500) from 3-point range. Smith opened the week scoring a career-high 34 points to go along with three assists in Wednesday’s 79-73 win over North Carolina. In Sunday’s 81-71 win at Miami, he finished with 18 points and five assists despite playing only 29 minutes.
Marshall averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 assists as the 20th-ranked Tar Heels split a pair of conference games on the week. The Dumfries, Va., freshman had a career-high 18 points, including 14 in the second half, three assists and three steals in Saturday’s 64-62 win at Clemson. Earlier in the week, Marshall had nine points, six assists and only one turnover in 37 minutes in a 79-73 loss at No. 5 Duke.

Both players deserve the recognition and award. Smith deserved POY, IMHO. He carries Duke game in and game out. I would agree that Marshall is more deserving than Barnes for ROY. Marshall started out of the gate strong while Barnes struggled to get where he is. No disrespect to Barnes, I just feel Marshall is more deserving.

Harrison Barnes, while coming on strong now, is not more deserving than Kendell Marshall. Marshall makes the UNC team much better. Harrison Barnes has the potential to be a national POY one day, but not yet. Kyrie Irving would have won ACC ROY if not for his unfortunate injury. (I strongly suspect Harrison Barnes will stay 1 more year. His NBA draft stock is much lower now, but eventually it will go higher than what it could be if he go to the NBA straight out of high school.)

Cant argue with Smith for ACC POY, and Marshall's looking strong for ACC ROY.

Agree totally. Marshall is much more important to UNC's success than Barnes. Odds are he'll stay longer, too.
