NCAA Game Summary - Central Michigan at Miami-Ohio

(Saturday, October 5)

Final Score: Central Michigan 21, Miami-Ohio 9

Oxford, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Saylor Lavalli scored two rushing touchdowns to push the Central Michigan Chippewas to a 21-9 victory over the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in a Mid-American Conference matchup at Yager Stadium.

Lavalli racked up 151 yards on 25 carries for the Chippewas (2-4, 1-1 MAC) as they snapped a three-game losing streak. Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore also made an impact on the ground with 50 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. Cooper Rush went 11-of-21 for 110 yards with an interception.

Austin Boucher completed 12-of-26 pass attempts for 161 yards and a touchdown while under center for the RedHawks (0-5, 0-1), who have lost nine games in a row dating back to last season. Austin Gearing also saw action at quarterback for Miami and went 3-of-6 for 24 yards in addition to his team-high 108 yards rushing. David Frazier led all receivers with 66 yards and a score on four catches.

Miami accounted for the only score of the first quarter, as Kalen Patterson put the RedHawks on top with a 40-yard field goal.

CMU retaliated early in the second quarter, going up 7-3 following a 16-yard rushing touchdown by Saylor Lavalli.

The RedHawks finally found the end zone after halftime as Boucher completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Frazier. Miami elected to go for two instead of try for an extra point, but Gearing was stopped short of the goal line which left its lead at 9-7 with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter.

The Chippewas took the lead back with less than a minute before the fourth quarter as Lavalli rushed three yards for a score to conclude a 16-play, 84- yard drive. Ron Coluzzi chipped in the extra point attempt to make it 14-9 with just over 15 minutes left to play.

CMU added some insurance in the fourth frame as Shoemaker-Gilmore scored on a 16-yard touchdown run.

Although both sides finished for 294 yards of total offense, Miami was penalized nine times for 74 yards. CMU was flagged only twice for 24 yards.

The all-time series between these cross division rivals is now tied, 12-12-1.
