NCAA Game Summary - Nevada at Boise State

(Saturday, October 19)

Final Score: Boise State 34, Nevada 17

Boise, ID (SportsNetwork.com) - Jay Ajayi erupted for 222 yards and three touchdowns to propel the Boise State Broncos to a 34-17 decision over the Nevada Wolf Pack in Mountain West Conference action at Bronco Stadium.

Ajayi carried the ball 24 times for Boise State (5-2, 3-1 MWC) as it picked up its third consecutive victory. Grant Hedrick completed 18-of-21 pass attempts for 150 yards while Matt Miller reeled in five catches for 55 yards. Hedrick also added 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground after relieving starting quarterback Joe Southwick, who left the game after suffering a broken ankle early in the game.

Cody Fajardo hit on 22-of-29 attempts for 208 passing yards while under center for Nevada (3-4, 2-2). Brandon Wimberly made a game-high 11 catches for 121 yards and Kendall Brock rushed 18 times for 78 yards and a touchdown. The loss was the second straight for the Wolf Pack.

The Wolf Pack received the ball to start the game and put together an impressive opening drive. After driving all the way to the Boise State 6-yard line, the offense stalled and Nevada was forced to settle for a 33-yard field goal by Brent Zuzo.

Neither side managed to produce any more points until Brock scored on a six- yard touchdown run at the 7:40 mark of the second quarter. Boise State finally ended its drought with a quick five-play, 80-yard drive that was concluded by a nine-yard Ajayi touchdown run.

Nevada's offense got into a rhythm when the Wolf Pack took over possession and drove 75 yards on 12 plays to set up Don Jackson for a three-yard touchdown rush. Zuzo's successful extra point conversion gave the visitors a 17-7 lead at the break.

The Broncos charged back after the break. They scored on their opening drive of the second half as Ajayi rushed four yards for a touchdown to conclude an eight play, 66-yard drive. Dan Goodale's extra-point attempt was missed though, which left Nevada ahead, 17-13.

The Wolf Pack could not get anything going on their ensuing drive and punted after moving the ball only 15 yards. Ajayi broke away for a 71-yard touchdown run on the first play of BSU's next drive. Goodale converted his extra point attempt to put the hosts on top, 20-17, with 9:20 remaining in the third quarter.

The Broncos continued their run as Hedrick scored on a 20-yard touchdown scamper with less than a minute left in the third frame. Hedrick was also responsible for the only touchdown of the fourth quarter as he scored on a 14- yard touchdown run with 8:28 left in regulation.

BSU held a 557-373 edge in total yards of offense despite possessing the ball for only 22:37. Nevada moved the chains on 4-of-8 third-down plays in the first half, but went just 1-of-6 on third-down conversions over the final 30 minutes.
