NCAA Game Summary - North Carolina at Virginia Tech

Final Score: Virginia Tech 27, North Carolina 17

Blacksburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Thomas completed three passing touchdowns to lead the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 27-17 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels at Lane Stadium.

Thomas was very efficient through the air, going 19-of-28 passing with no interceptions. Willie Byrn led the Hokies (4-1, 2-0 ACC) in receiving with 123 yards on four catches. Virginia Tech gained only 48 rushing yards on 34 attempts in the contest.

For the Tar Heels (1-4, 0-2), Marquise Williams went 23-of-35 for 277 yards and two passing scores, but also threw two interceptions. Williams also led North Carolina in rushing with 56 yards on 18 attempts. The top receiver was Quinshad Davis with 94 yards and a touchdown on six catches. UNC was without its usual starting QB Bryn Renner, who was sidelined with a foot injury.

Virginia Tech started off the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to Demitri Knowles.

The home team scored again on its next drive through the air. Thomas completed a nine-yard pass to D.J. Coles for a touchdown. This put the Hokies up 14-0 with 12:56 left before intermission.

The Tar Heels answered with a six-yard touchdown throw from Williams to Eric Ebron.

Virginia Tech would set up their next score with an 83-yard pass from Thomas to Byrn which put the ball at the North Carolina 15-yard line. Two plays later, Thomas completed a five-yard pass to Coles for a touchdown.

UNC was able to score first in the second half on a 36-yard field goal from Thomas Moore. This cut the deficit to 11 as the score was 21-10 with 3:38 remaining in the third stanza.

After recovering Ryan Switzer's fumble on a punt, Virginia Tech was able to drive down the field and score on a one-yard rush by Trey Edmunds. After the extra-point was blocked the Hokies led 27-10.

With 1:09 remaining the Tar Heels were able to score a touchdown. Williams hit Davis on a 24-yard pass. The late score left UNC with a 10-point deficit that the Hokies protected until time expired.

Turnovers killed the Tar Heels as they lost one fumble and two interceptions. The Hokies were guilty of no giveaways in their win.

Coming into the day Virginia Tech was fourth in the nation in total defense, only allowing an average of 241.2 yards per game. UNC was able to rack up 376 yards but failed to capitalize as it went 6-of-16 on third-down conversion attempts.
