Jack Tyler recorded 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in the loss.

The only score of the opening quarter came courtesy of a three-yard rushing touchdown by Edmunds just over six minutes after the inaugural kickoff.

Maryland finally responded at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter as William Likely returned a punt 63 yards to the end zone to tie the game at seven. The Terrapins took a 14-7 lead into intermission after Brown punched in it from a yard out in the closing seconds of the first half.

The Terrapins extended their lead as they produced a five-play, 78-yard drive that was concluded with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brown to King on their first possession of the second half. After Demitri Knowles returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to give Virginia Tech starting position at Maryland's 12-yard line, Thomas narrowed the gap with a one-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Coles that made the score 21-14 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

Neither offense managed to produce any more points in the third stanza. Virginia Tech evened the score with 9:32 left in regulation as Thomas threw a five-yard strike to Byrne for a score. Both offenses were held scoreless for the remainder of the fourth quarter which sent the contest into overtime.

The Hokies made their way to the Terrapins' 6-yard line in the first part of the extra session, but had to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Eric Kristensen after Thomas was sacked on third-and-goal. Ross gained 22 yards on the first two plays of Maryland's possession before Brown broke the plane to give the Terrapins the triumph.

Both sides finished with 15 first downs. Although Maryland committed two turnovers, it still gained 319 yards of total offense compared to only 264 by the Hokies.
