UNC scored the first 23 points of the afternoon, beginning with a 26-yard touchdown run by Morris at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter, although a failed two-point conversion left the hosts with a 6-0 advantage.

Renner then called his own number to cap off a 10-play, 73-yard drive in the waning moments of the first frame, crossing the goal line from a yard out.

A one-yard TD run by Romar Morris at the 4:31 mark of the second was followed by a 39-yard field goal by Thomas Moore as time expired in the first half.

Thomas Moore knocked through a 35-yard field goal late in the third period after the Heels were stopped after 15 plays and 58 yards.

The Middle Tennessee defense showed signs of life in the fourth when Jared Singletary recovered a fumble and returned it 25 yards for a score, but again a two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Blue Raiders with a 26-13 deficit with just under 13 minutes remaining in regulation.

Renner answered right back with a 18-yard touchdown pass to Quinshad Davis less than two minutes later to put North Carolina up 33-13. Later in the quarter Marquise Williams threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bug Howard to give the Tar Heels even more of a cushion.

Middle Tennessee backup quarterback Austin Grammer connected with Chris Perkins on a 12-yard TD pass play, cutting the lead late in the game to 40-20.

Coming into the game Renner had not thrown an interception in his last 134 attempts, but the streak ended at 140 when he was picked off by defensive back Sammy Seamster early in the second quarter.
