El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Kasey Carrier rushed 21 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game in the extra session to help the New Mexico Lobos to a thrilling, 42-35, overtime win over Texas-El Paso at the Sun Bowl.

Carrier racked up 291 yards on a career-high 41 carries for New Mexico (1-1), which lost at home to Texas-San Antonio in its season opener. Clayton Mitchem went 4-of-7 for 88 yards passing and also tallied 51 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Of the Lobos' 483 yards of total offense, 395 came courtesy of the rushing attack. Dallas Bollema and Rashad Rainey recorded nine tackles apiece in the win.

Jameill Showers went 15-of-20 for 119 yards and a touchdown while under center for UTEP (0-1) as it lost its first game under the guidance of first-year head coach Sean Kugler, who was most recently the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Aaron Jones paced the Miners on the ground with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 11 attempts. Nathan Jeffery scored two touchdowns and contributed 72 total yards. Traun Roberson paced UTEP's defense with 13 total stops and a forced fumble.

UTEP's opening drive stalled near midfield and Mike Ruggles's punt sailed into the end zone for a touchback. The Lobos handed off the ball to Carrier on eight of their first nine plays before he scored on a two-yard run with just under six minutes left in the first quarter.

The Miners responded early in the second quarter when Showers completed a screen pass to Jeffery, who took the reception 13 yards into the end zone. The first touchdown of the season for UTEP tied the score at seven with 12:30 left before halftime.

New Mexico answered right back with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that featured just one passing attempt. Mitchem still made a big contribution as he concluded the drive with a 19-yard rushing touchdown.

UTEP tied it up at 14 as Jeffery scored his second touchdown of the contest. This time, he rushed four yards into the end zone at the 4:38 mark of the second quarter. The Lobos took the lead back on the third play of their ensuing drive as Carrier broke away for a 30-yard touchdown run.

The Miners managed to go into halftime tied at 21 as Showers scored on a 14- yard touchdown run with only 32 seconds left in the period.

UTEP took its first lead of the game on a big play in the third quarter. Aaron Jones dashed 65 yards for a touchdown near the midway point of the period to put the Miners on top, 28-21.

After being shutout in the third quarter, New Mexico ended the home team's run when a two-yard touchdown run by Carrier. Justus Adams chipped in the extra point to make it 28-28 with just over 13 minutes left in regulation.

The Lobos' defense forced a three-and-out on the following UTEP possession and the offense produced another touchdown drive to take a 35-28 lead. Mitchem completed the eight-play drive that was made up entirely of running plays with a 17-yard rush near the midpoint of the fourth quarter.

The Miners refused to go away and produced a 14-play, 70-yard drive that Jones punctuated with an eight-yard touchdown run. Jay Mattox converted the extra point try to tie the score again with just over a minute left in the final frame. New Mexico was unable to score before the end of the quarter which sent the game into overtime.

Carrier scored on the third play of the extra session to put the Lobos ahead. UTEP drove to the Lobos' four-yard line, but Jeffery was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-one which gave the victory to New Mexico.

The Lobos outgained the Miners in total yards of offense by 84 yards. New Mexico held possession of the ball for 45:56 while UTEP had the ball for only 28:04.
