NCAA Game Summary - Miami-Ohio at Massachusetts

(Saturday, October 12)

Final Score: Massachusetts 17, Miami-Ohio 10

Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Doyle threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns as the Massachusetts Minutemen held off the Miami-Ohio RedHawks, 17-10, in a battle of winless Mid-American Conference teams at Gillette Stadium.

Doyle completed 19-of-35 passes and threw a pair of interceptions for UMass (1-5, 1-1 MAC), which won its first game since Nov. 10, 2012. Jamal Wilson was a workhorse out of the backfield with 23 carries for 82 yards, while Rob Blanchflower caught five passes for a season-high 98 yards and a touchdown.

For Miami-Ohio (0-6, 0-2), Austin Boucher had 166 passing yards and a touchdown, but he was largely ineffective, completing just 14-of-34 pass attempts while tossing three interceptions. Dawan Scott rushed for 55 yards on just five carries while also tallying four receptions for 58 yards.

UMass got the scoring starter at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter when Doyle hooked up with Elgin Long for a 22-yard touchdown pass to finish off a nine- play, 55-yard drive.

The RedHawks answered back early in the second quarter, tying the game on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Boucher to Steve Marck.

The Minutemen had an opportunity to retake the lead late in the second quarter as they drove down to Miami-Ohio's 27-yard line, but the possession was halted by a Doyle interception.

Miami-Ohio took its first lead of the game midway through the third quarter when Kaleb Patterson knocked through a 45-yard field goal. UMass struck back later in the frame, however, as Doyle hooked up with Blanchflower for a 47- yard touchdown.

The Minutemen extended their lead to seven points early in the fourth quarter following a 25-yard field goal by Blake Lucas.

UMass had an opportunity to put the game away with under two minutes remaining but Lucas missed a 44-yard field goal attempt to give the ball back to Miami- Ohio. The RedHawks could not muster up any heroics, however, as they turned the ball over on downs on their final drive.

The UMass defense allowed Miami-Ohio to gain only 290 yards. The unit was especially strong on third down, allowing the RedHawks to convert just 1-of-11 attempts.
