NCAA Game Summary - Rice at Tulsa

(Saturday, October 5)

Final Score: Rice 30, Tulsa 27 (OT)

Tulsa, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor McHargue's 25-yard touchdown pass to Darik Dillard in overtime pushed the Rice Owls to a thrilling 30-27 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in Conference USA action at Chapman Stadium.

Dillard finished the game with just that single reception for the Owls (3-2, 2-0 C-USA) as they registered their second straight win and the third in the last four outings. McHargue completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 177 yards and two touchdowns, shaking off an interception and four sacks along the way.

The Golden Hurricane (1-4, 0-1), a loser in three straight since posting a 30-27 victory over Colorado State early last month, was paced by Trey Watts who carried the ball 34 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Cody Green converted half of his 32 pass attempts for 193 yards, but he was also intercepted twice.

Jeremy Eddington opened the day's scoring with a four-yard touchdown run to cap a 13-play, 75-yard drive on the first possession of the afternoon for the Owls.

Tulsa's response was a 33-yard field goal by Carl Salazar midway through the first quarter to cut the deficit to four points.

Rice pushed the advantage to double figures just over two minutes later thanks to a four-yard TD run by Darrion Pollard.

Needing just five plays to travel 65 yards, the Hurricane came back with an 18-yard TD run by Watts.

Ahead by four entering the second quarter, the Owls added a 27-yard field goal from Chris Boswell and a nine-yard TD pass from McHargue to Turner Petersen to create a 24-10 halftime lead.

Tulsa delivered 14 unanswered points in the second half, beginning with a 37- yard field goal in the third quarter and continuing with a one-yard touchdown run from Watts, which was followed by a two-point conversion by Watts as well.

With just 1:07 left in regulation, Salazar knocked through a 36-yard field goal to knot the score at 24-24 and send the meeting into overtime.

Tulsa took the first possession of overtime but had to settle for a 36-yard field goal before Dillard posted the game-winning catch.

The Golden Hurricane came out on the losing end despite generating 415 yards of total offense, compared to 344 for the visitors.

For the Owls, who were penalized 11 times for 91 yards, it was their first overtime win since 2006 when the team turned the trick against this same Tulsa squad.
