NCAA Game Summary - Nebraska at Purdue

(Saturday, October 12)

Final Score: Nebraska 44, Purdue 7

West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Ameer Abdullah ran for 126 yards and a touchdown, as the Nebraska Cornhuskers cruised to a 44-7 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Ten Conference play from Ross-Ade Stadium.

The Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) were sharp in their first road game of the season, racking up 251 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong, Jr. made his third consecutive start at quarterback in place of the injured Taylor Martinez but largely struggled, finishing with 43 yards and three interceptions on 6-of-18 passing. Senior Ron Kellogg III also saw some action and managed to complete 10-of-13 passes for 141 yards and a TD.

DeAngelo Yancey led the way with 146 yards and a score on five catches for the Boilermakers (1-5, 0-2), who suffered their fifth straight loss. Danny Etling was 14-of-35 for 184 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and he also took five sacks.

Armstrong led the Cornhuskers on an 11-play, 66-yard drive on their first possession, which ended with Armstrong's three-yard touchdown run.

Imani Cross made it a 14-0 game with a one-yard touchdown plunge on the final play of the opening frame, capping a 12-play drive that took more than five minutes off the clock.

Nebraska's offense needed only one play for its next score, as Abdullah broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run after the Cornhuskers recovered a fumble in Purdue territory.

Cross scored again on a two-yard run midway through the third quarter to make it a 28-0 game.

The Nebraska defense was responsible for the next points, as Randy Gregory sacked Etling in the end zone for a 17-yard loss and a safety to push the Huskers' lead to 30-0.

An eight-yard pass from Kellogg to Quincy Enunwa made it a 37-0 game at the 12:47 mark of the fourth quarter.

King Frazier tacked on a three-yard TD run in the waning moments, and Purdue avoided the shutout thanks to a 55-yard scoring strike from Etling to Yancey with 39 seconds remaining.

Purdue's late TD spoiled what would have been Nebraska's first shutout since 2009. Still, the Huskers defense managed five sacks and two takeaways while holding the Boilermakers to 216 yards of total offense, a chunk of which came on their final play.
