Indiana opened the scoring with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Sudfeld to Latimer with just over ten minutes left in the first quarter. Michigan then rattled off 21-straight points over the next quarter and a half. First Gardner ran it in from 13 yards out midway through the first. Then a pair of touchdown runs by Toussaint, from two and seven yards out, respectively, gave Michigan a 21-7 lead midway through the second frame.

The Hoosiers answered when Roberson found Wynn for a 33-yard touchdown pass with just under six minutes to play in the half to cut the Wolverines' lead to 21-14. Michigan responded with another touchdown drive, this one topped off by when Gallon pulled in a 21-yard scoring pass from Gardner with 40 seconds left before halftime. The Hoosiers managed to pull out one more score in the half, with Mitch Ewald booming a 50-yard field goal as time expired in the half with Michigan on top, 28-17.

The Hoosiers scored early in the second half, converting a Michigan fumble on the opening drive of the half into a touchdown when Coleman punched it in from the two yards out to cut the Wolverine lead to just 28-24. The Wolverines came right back with a score when Gardner again found Gallon for a 50-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-24 just two minutes later. Indiana then scored ten-straight, first with a five-yard pass from Roberson to Wynn then with a 23-yard field goal that saw them down just one, 35-34 with 6:17 remaining in the third.

The teams then traded touchdown drives over the next ten minutes. Toussaint scored another rushing touchdown, this time from one yard out. Roberson then hit Hughes with a 67-yard touchdown pass late in the third. Gardner then scored on a six-yard run early in the fourth, followed by a Roberson 15-yard touchdown run that left the Hoosiers down by only two, 49-47, with 12:15 left in regulation.

Both squads turned the ball over late in the game. After driving 78 yards to the Indiana two-yard line, Gardner fumbled on 1st-and-goal and the ball was recovered by the Hoosiers. After getting a first down at their own 14, Sudfeld's pass was intercepted at the Indiana 35-yard line by Gordon Thomas who returned it all the way to the Hoosier five-yard line. Three plays later, Gardner ran it in for the score and a 56-47 lead with just over six minutes to play.

Indiana took the ball and drove to the Michigan 30-yard line before Thomas nabbed his second interception of the game, this time picking off Roberson with under three minutes left in the game, giving the Wolverines the ball at their own 17-yard line. The Wolverines then marched the ball 83 yards down the field where Toussaint ran for his fourth score of the day, putting Michigan up by the final score of 63-47.

The Wolverines amassed a school-record 751 yards of total offense in the win. The Hoosiers' 47 points are the most scored and 572 yards are the most gained against Michigan in the 62 all-time meetings.
