NCAA Game Summary - Nebraska at Penn State

(Saturday, November 23)

Final Score: Nebraska 23, Penn State 20 (OT)

University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pat Smith knocked in three field goals after halftime, including the 42-yard game winner in overtime, as the Nebraska Cornhuskers earned a win over the Penn State Nittany Lions in Big Ten action at Beaver Stadium.

Ron Kellogg III threw for 191 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-34 passing for Nebraska (8-3, 5-2 Big Ten), while Ameer Abdullah racked up 147 yards on 25 carries. Jordan Westerkamp was the lead receiver with 62 yards on five receptions.

Christian Hackenberg threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns but completed only 16-of-33 passes and was also intercepted once for Penn State (6-5, 3-4). Zach Zwinak rushed for 149 yards on 35 carries and Allen Robinson brought in 106 yards on eight catches.

Hackenberg threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Adam Breneman near the end of a quiet first quarter to start the scoring. However Sam Ficken missed the extra point.

The Cornhuskers took the lead when Kellogg III connected with Quincy Enunwa for a 27-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter.

Hackenberg scored on a seven-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to give the Nittany Lions the lead once again.

On the ensuing kickoff Kenny Bell returned the ball 99 yards for a touchdown to push the Cornhuskers back in front.

Smith hit the first of his field goals later in the third quarter, with a 39- yard effort.

Hackenberg threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Jesse James early in the fourth quarter to stake the Nittany Lions to a 20-17 advantage.

Smith would even the score with a 19-yard field goal with 4:29 to play and with neither team able to score before the end of regulation, the game went to overtime.

In the extra session Penn State got the ball first but failed to score when Ficken missed a 37-yard field goal attempt wide right. That setup the Cornhuskers, who won on the 42-yard field goal from Smith.

Penn State converted on just 2-of-14 third down chances. Nebraska was unable to score a touchdown on all three red zone trips, settling for field goals twice and missing out completely when Abdullah lost a fumble in the second quarter.
