GAME NOTES: The regular season comes to a close for both the Boston College
Eagles and the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon when the two meet up in
Raleigh for an ACC showdown.
Boston College's season has been a disappointment as it has registered just
two wins, only one of which came against an ACC opponent (Maryland, 20-17).
The Eagles are currently riding a three-game losing streak following a 30-23
overtime defeat at the hands of Virginia Tech last week, a game they led late
in the fourth quarter.
NC State got off to a fast start this year with wins in five of its first
seven games, but since then it has been sliding in the ACC standings after
losing three of four, including last week's shootout at nationally-ranked
Clemson, 62-48. The good news for the Wolfpack is that they have gone 4-1 at
home this season, while Boston College is winless in five road tilts.
Boston College leads the all-time series, 6-3, but NC State has taken two of
the three matchups in Raleigh.
The Eagles offense has been grounded this season, as their 20.7 ppg and 351.9
ypg both rank 10th in the ACC.
Chase Rettig has put up solid yardage (2,942) and touchdown (17) totals under
center, but he's completing less than 57 percent of his passes and has tossed
10 interceptions. He was especially inefficient last week, completing just 13-
of-30 pass attempts.
Andre Williams (599 yards, four TDs) is the team's leading receiver but he was
injured in the Nov. 4 matchup against Wake Forest and hasn't played since.
Rolandan Finch was impressive in his absence last week with a season-high 138
yards rushing to go along with five receptions for 53 yards.
Rettig has the luxury of throwing to one of the best receivers in the nation,
as Alex Amidon leads the ACC in both catches (75) and yards (1,175) while
hauling in seven touchdowns.
The Boston College defense hasn't done much to help its struggling offense, as
it allows nearly 30 ppg and 466 ypg.
Nick Clancy is one of the top linebackers in the country with 127 stops, and
he is the reigning ACC Linebacker of the Week after recording 20 tackles
against Virginia Tech. Steele Divitto (84 tackles, two FF, three fumble
recoveries) and Spenser Rositano (three INTs) have also been standouts for the
unit.
NC State's 597-yard outburst in the shootout loss against Clemson really
helped its mediocre offensive statistics on the year (28.5 ppg, 425 ypg).
Mike Glennon threw for 493 yards and tied a career-high with five touchdown
passes a week ago. The senior QB has amassed the most passing yards in the
league (3,403) and has tossed 27 touchdown passes, but he's completing just 57
percent of his throws and has a league-high 14 interceptions.
Glennon has a trio of strong receivers to rely on in Quintin Payton (44
receptions, 693 yards), Bryan Underwood (42 receptions, 618 yards), and Tobias
Palmer (39 receptions, 615 yards). Underwood is also second in the conference
in touchdown catches with 10. Palmer went off against Clemson, setting an ACC
record for all-purpose yards in a game with 496 (219 receiving, 277 kick
return).
Shadrach Thornton (550 yards, three TDs) and Tony Creecy (433 yards, four TDs)
have nearly split carries right down the middle for the Wolfpack. Last week it
was Thornton's turn to go off for 114 yards and a score.
The Wolfpack defense (25.9 ppg, 428.5 ypg) had been largely reliable this
season up until their debacle against Clemson where they allowed 62 points and
a whopping 754 yards of offense
Earl Wolff has 100 tackles and Brandon Bishop has 95 stops, while each has
recorded a pair of interceptions. David Amerson has four picks while knocking
down another 13 passes thrown his way.
Both teams have been inconsistent this season, but NC State hasn't become bowl
eligible by accident. Against a lackluster team in front of their home crowd,
the Wolfpack will improve their bowl resume' with a convincing win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: NC State 40, Boston College 24
Indy 500 qualifying Ed Carpenter is on the pole, followed by three of Michael Andretti's five drivers -- rookie Carlos Munoz of Colombia, Marco Andretti and Venezuelan E.J. Viso.
