GAME NOTES: The Navy Midshipmen try to keep their unblemished home record intact this weekend, as they host the South Alabama Jaguars in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Since winning the first two games of the season against Indiana and Delaware, the Midshipmen have been rather sporadic, failing to put together back-to-back victories since. However, the team has a chance to make that happen this weekend after defeating visiting Hawaii on Nov. 9 by a score of 42-28. The win was the second in the last three outings for Navy and now has the team in the mind set of making it to the postseason.

As for the Jaguars, representatives from the Sun Belt Conference, they are down near the bottom of the league standings with just one victory in four opportunities. The last outing for USA took place on Nov. 2, as the team hosted Arkansas State and came up short in a 17-16 final. The defeat was the second in a row and the fourth in five tries overall.

The South Alabama offense is under the direction of quarterback Ross Metheny who has completed a solid 61.8 percent of his pass attempts through eight games, leading to 227.1 ypg. However, the signal caller has just nine passing scores and has thrown six interceptions and his top receiver, Wes Saxton (39 catches, 496 yards) has yet to find his way into the end zone.

Metheny is second on the unit with 359 rushing yards, but tops with eight rushing TDs for a program that ranks third in the conference and 46th nationally in total offense with 437.1 ypg.

Over on the defensive side, the most disruptive performer to this point in the campaign has to be Alex Page who, despite having made a total of just 30 stops, paces the squad with 11 TFL and 5.5 sacks. Also attacking at the line of scrimmage is Romelle Jones who also has 30 overall tackles, nine of those coming behind the line and five against the opposing quarterback.

Keenan Reynolds erupted for a game-high 226 yards and four touchdowns on 28 rushing attempts as the Midshipmen took down the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors by two touchdowns at home in Annapolis the last time out. Reynolds also completed half of his eight pass attempts for 59 yards and a TD to Geoffrey Whiteside in the first quarter to kick off the day's scoring.

Quinton Singleton contributed to the attack with 93 yards and a TD on 15 attempts for Navy, as the group won for the second time in the last three outings, even while allowing 464 yards to a road-weary Hawaii group. Keeping the game from getting too far out of hand, the Midshipmen relied on DJ Sargenti (14 tackles), Cody Peterson (14) and Wave Ryder (12) to cut down the Rainbow Warriors.

Peterson leads the team in total stops with 98, while Sargenti accounts for 73 tackles. However, Navy is one of the weakest teams in the nation when it comes to posting sacks, averaging less than one per game. Obi Uzoma has made the biggest impact in that department with two quarterback takedowns.

Reynolds may be the one who handles the ball most of the time for Navy, generating 18 touchdowns on the ground and another six through the air, but he is far from the only offensive player who can do damage for the Midshipmen. In fact, the team has a total of nine players who have run for at least 140 yards, and eight who have made their way into the end zone on the ground.

Navy might not be the most bruising defense in the land these days, but as long as South Alabama keeps the ball on the ground the Midshipmen should be in contention for the victory.
