No. 17 Wisconsin runs all over Indiana

Madison, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Wisconsin hardly stopped running after James White broke free for the longest run in school history -- a 93-yard touchdown on the first play of the game.

What do you get when you pit the nation's 10th-best rushing offense against one if its worst rushing defenses?

How about 50 combined carries for 554 yards.

White gained 205 yards on 20 carries -- one of three Badgers to go over 100 -- and No. 17 Wisconsin cruised to a 51-3 victory over Indiana on Saturday.

Melvin Gordon ran for 146 yards and a touchdown, Corey Clement rushed for 108 and two scores and even wide receiver Jared Abbrederis got in on the action, reaching the end zone on two end-arounds totaling 81 yards.

"We had a great week of practice and our coaches just put us in a really good spot to make big plays," said Badgers offensive lineman Dan Voltz. "We played well up front and it showed. To have over 500 yards rushing is impressive against any team."

Joel Stave spent much of the day handing it off but also threw for 122 yards on 7-of-15 passing for the Badgers (8-2, 5-1 Big Ten), who have won five in a row since falling to Ohio State on Sept. 28.

Nate Sudfeld was 9-of-22 for 99 yards and threw an interception that led to Wisconsin's first touchdown. Stephen Houston rushed for 61 yards but lost a fumble that turned into Wisconsin's second score.

The Hoosiers (4-6, 2-4) still need two wins to become bowl-eligible -- and it will be tough. They play No. 3 Ohio State on the road next week and finish the season at home against Purdue Nov. 30.

Wisconsin, which came into the game averaging 280 rushing yards per game, has won nine in a row over Indiana. The Hoosiers were ranked 109th in the nation in run defense coming in, giving up an average of 217 yards per game.

"I think their really good secret is the tight ends and the fullbacks and the quarterback making checks to get them good plays," said Indiana coach Kevin Wilson. "It's a total team deal."

Sojourn Shelton intercepted Sudfeld five plays into the game and White broke free through the right side of the line on first down for his 93-yard score. White was trailed by several Indiana defenders all the way to the end zone but wide receiver Alex Erickson blocked the only one with a chance to tackle him.

"We faked a fly sweep to Melvin and the defense was out of their gaps," said White. "All I had to do was run straight and Erickson had a great block just to keep the guy off me in case I decided to run slow and get caught."

White went over 1,000 yards for the season on the play and said someone told him when he got to the sideline that it was the longest run in school history.

It was only the third run of at least 90 yards by a Wisconsin player after Tom Bringham's 91-yarder against Western Michigan on Sept. 21, 1963, and David Gilreath's 90-yarder at Indiana on Nov. 8, 2008.

"It's a pretty cool accomplishment," White said. "That should go down for the offensive linemen and the receivers on that."

Houston's fumble was recovered by Brendan Kelly at the Indiana 14 and Gordon's 1-yard run made it 14-0 less than three minutes into the game.

Jack Russell kicked field goals of 31 and 36 yards on the next two Badgers possessions. Wisconsin didn't score again until Abbrederis went untouched around the right side for a 32-yard touchdown that made it 27-0 with 5 1/2 minutes left in the first half.

Russell's third field goal made it 30-0 in the third quarter and was set up by tight end Jacob Pedersen's 61-yard reception to the 2-yard line after a fake handoff.

The Hoosiers were whistled for a delay of game penalty on third down at the Badgers 1-yard line and Sudefeld threw incomplete through the back of the end zone, setting up Mitch Ewald's 23-field goal for Indiana's only points.

Abbraderis got a late block on his second end-around touchdown, a 49-yarder, and Clement scored from 19 and 21 yards in the fourth quarter to make it 51-3.

Game Notes

Wisconsin is at Minnesota next week and home against Penn State to finish the regular season Nov. 30 ... It was the first time in 11 games the Hoosiers failed to score at least 28 points ... Indiana's last win against Wisconsin came Oct. 12, 2002.
