Independents News and Notes

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) -

ARMY: The Black Knights continue to rest up for their next battle on the schedule, one with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Honolulu on Nov. 30. Army trails in the all-time series by a count of 2-0, the most recent setback taking place in 2010 by a score of 31-28 at West Point. While it still went down as a loss, the good news for the Knights is that the meeting three years ago was much more competitive than the 59-28 beating they suffered in the very first encounter with Hawaii back in 2003.

BYU: The Cougars made it look very easy on Saturday night as they steam rolled to a 59-13 win over FCS foe Idaho State at home, scoring 35 points in the second period alone before taking their foot off the gas. Jamaal Williams carried the ball 13 times and gained 131 yards, not to mention scoring three touchdowns as the unit generated 421 yards on the ground alone. Adam Hine pitched in with a game-high 141 yards and a score on 10 carries of his own. Quarterback Taysom Hill, who was pulled before halftime, connected on 11-of-19 for 153 yards and two touchdowns, but was also intercepted three times. Defensively, the Cougars held Idaho State to just 287 yards of total offense as Kyle Van Noy and Kai Nacua both registered a pair of tackles for loss. The Cougars head to South Bend this coming weekend to challenge another Independent program in Notre Dame. BYU trails in the all-time series by a count of 5-2, losing a 17-14 matchup in the most recent encounter last season.

IDAHO: The Vandals head back to the football field this weekend after some time off, but the squad is probably not looking forward to the opponent. For the first time in school history, Idaho is going up against the Florida State Seminoles, the second-ranked team in the nation.

NAVY: Quarterback Keenan Reynolds threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the Midshipmen crushed visiting South Alabama, 42-14. The victory was the second in a row and the third in the last four outings for Navy and, more importantly made the program bowl eligible, which means they already have tickets on sale for the Armed Forces Bowl which will be played in Fort Worth, Texas on Dec. 30 versus a representative from the Mountain West Conference. Reynolds converted 10-of-17 passes for 168 yards and a score to Matt Aiken, adding another 59 yards on the ground on 17 carries for a rushing attack that generated 351 yards and four TDs. Darius Staten took top honors this time with seven carries for 127 yards and a TD. The Midshipmen head out to the West Coast this week where they will tangle with the San Jose State Spartans on Friday night. Navy has come up short in each of the previous meetings, losing last year at home by a score of 12-0.

NEW MEXICO STATE: The Aggies were again off last week after bowing to Boston College on Nov. 9 by a score of 48-34 at home in Las Cruces. The team has now fallen in two straight games and nine times overall in 10 chances this season. The lone victory for NMSU was a 34-29 final versus Abilene Christian on Oct. 26 which means the squad has not defeated another program from the FBS since taking down Fresno State, 48-45, at home back on Nov. 12, 2011. The next opponent on the schedule for the Aggies is Florida Atlantic this weekend in the Sunshine State.

NOTRE DAME: Now sporting a record of 7-3 overall, the Fighting Irish took time off last week to recoup after losing to Pittsburgh (28-21) in the Steel City on Nov. 9. The setback snapped a four-game win streak which had pushed Notre Dame back into the national rankings. The Fighting Irish have the BYU Cougars as their next target this weekend, hoping to build on a 17-14 win last year that was their second in a row and the third in the last four meetings versus the Provo-based program. Notre Dame holds a 5-2 edge in the all-time series as a result. The team's final game of the regular season takes place on Nov. 30 versus nationally-ranked Stanford on the road.
