P.J. Mays
In his second season with YSU after transferring from Cincinnati, Mays captured Gateway Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. On the season, the Youngstown native bolted for 1,446 yards and 21 touchdowns, setting a Penguins record for rushing yards in a campaign. Though he was effectively shut down by 2001 playoff participants Northern Iowa (39 yards) and Western Kentucky (53 yards), Mays proved his capabilities in a near-upset of I-A Marshall in the season finale, when he rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. This year, Mays will be counted on to provide YSU?s offensive punch, as Jon Heacock?s team looks to find itself in the playoffs once again.
-Tony Moss

Western Illinois head coach Don Patterson on Mays, "I like him, I think he?s a hard-nosed tough football player. He had a key play a year ago, they ran a shovel pass to him in long yardage and he made a nice run, broke some tackles to score on. I voted for him for offensive player of the year [in the Gateway] because I thought he deserved it."
