NCAA Game Summary - South Alabama at Tulane

(Saturday, September 7)

Final Score: South Alabama 41, Tulane 39

New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Ross Metheny accounted for four total touchdowns to lead the South Alabama Jaguars to a 41-39 victory over the Tulane Green Wave in non-conference action at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Metheny threw for 290 yards on 19-of-30 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions for South Alabama (1-1), which bounced back after a season- opening loss to Southern Utah on Aug. 29. The signal-caller also rushed for a team-high 75 yards with two more scores on the ground.

Wes Saxton hauled in seven receptions for 92 yards for the Jaguars, while Shavarez Smith, Jereme Jones and Danny Woodson all had at least 50 yards receiving.

For Tulane (1-1), Nick Montana completed 29-of-47 passes for a career-high 327 yards, tossing three touchdowns and one interception. Ryan Grant had a monster day receiving, setting career-best marks with 14 receptions and 187 yards while reeling in a pair of touchdowns. Orleans Darkwa had just 32 yards on 10 carries but found the end zone twice.

A pair of Metheny touchdowns in the game's first five minutes put the Jaguars up 14-0 early. First the quarterback rushed in a 35-yard score, then he hooked up with Shavarez for a 14-yard touchdown.

Tulane cut its deficit in half later in the first quarter when Darkwa ran in a two-yard touchdown, but Metheny struck again less than three minutes later with a 30-yard scoring strike to Davin Hawkins.

South Alabama added to its advantage early in the second quarter on another Metheny rushing touchdown, this time from 12 yards out.

The Green Wave answered at the 10:30 mark of the second quarter when Justyn Shackleford took a screen pass from Montana 29 yards for a touchdown.

After the Tulane defense recorded a safety, Cairo Santos knocked through a 47- yard field goal to inch the Green Wave closer.

South Alabama stopped the Tulane run when Aleem Sunanon connected on a 46-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the first half, as the Jaguars went into intermission with a 31-19 lead.

Darkwa converted a one-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to bring the Green Wave's deficit to five, then they took a 33-31 lead later in the frame following a 40-yard touchdown toss from Montana to Grant.

The Jaguars shifted the momentum in their favor late in the third quarter when Terrance Timmons recovered a blocked punt and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown.

A 23-yard field goal off the foot of Sunanon with 6:07 left in the game gave South Alabama an eight-point cushion, 41-33.

The Green Wave capped off a 15-play, 82-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Montana to Grant with 1:19 left to bring them to within two, but they failed to tie the game on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt.

South Alabama held Tulane to just 45 yards rushing on the day while piling up 168 rushing yards itself.
