NCAA Game Summary - Western Kentucky at Army

(Saturday, November 9)

Final Score: Western Kentucky 21, Army 17

West Point, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Doughty threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers bested the Army Black Knights, 21-17, at Michie Stadium.

Doughty completed 16-of-24 passes for the Hilltoppers (6-4), who became bowl eligible for the third straight season. The quarterback found a reliable target in Willie McNeal, who caught six passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Antonio Andrews, the nation's leading rusher, turned in another solid performance, carrying the ball 24 times for 117 yards and scoring the game's winning touchdown.

The Black Knights (3-7) mustered 277 rushing yards, the bulk of which were supplied by Terry Baggett (12 carries, 102 yards, TD) and Tony Giovannelli (six carries, 82 yards). Angel Santiago (8-of-11) also threw for 70 yards.

Neither team could manage to put points on the board in the game's opening quarter as Army attempted to establish its rushing game.

Midway through the second quarter, a promising Army touchdown run was called back because of an offensive clipping penalty.

The Black Knights finally put points on the board with 3:35 left in the quarter on a Daniel Grochowski field goal from 25 yards, the only scoring of the first half.

Army increased its lead and opened the second-half scoring four and a half minutes in with a one-yard run through the middle by Santiago.

The Hilltoppers got in the game five minutes later with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Doughty to McNeal.

Doughty hooked up with McNeal again and kept WKU's momentum going, scoring in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a four-yard completion and pushing the Hilltoppers out to a 14-10 lead.

Army reclaimed the lead with seven minutes remaining in the game on a 20-yard touchdown run by Baggett, making it 17-14.

The Hilltoppers used up most of the remainder of the clock on their ensuing drive, with Andrews scoring on a two-yard touchdown run, grabbing a 21-17 advantage.

The Knights fumbled on an attempted hook-and-ladder play with 27 seconds left, allowing the Hilltoppers to recover the ball, take a knee and leave with the victory.
