NCAA Game Summary - Louisiana Tech at FIU

(Saturday, October 26)

Final Score: Louisiana Tech 23, FIU 7

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Louisiana Tech kicker Kyle Fischer converted all five of his field goal attempts as he helped guide the Bulldogs to a 23-7 win over the FIU Panthers in the first-ever meeting between the two Conference USA members.

Fischer helped pick up the slack for a Louisiana Tech (3-5, 2-2 C-USA) squad that converted just 3-of-15 on third down but still won for the second time in the last three outings. Quarterback Ryan Higgins connected on 20-of-31 pass attempts for 192 yards and a score, but he was sacked twice and tossed three interceptions on the evening. Kenneth Dixon accounted for a game-high 119 rushing yards on 23 carries and also turned three receptions into 64 yards and a TD for the visitors.

The Panthers (1-6, 1-2), losers of two straight after posting their only win of the season against a winless Southern Miss program, 24-23, were paced by Jake Medlock who connected on 11-of-26 passing for 128 yards and a score, but he was taken down for five sacks and was picked off twice.

Fischer accounted for all nine points scored in the first half as he delivered on field goals of 26 and 35 yards in the first quarter and then knocked through a 33-yard effort in the second.

FIU cut into the lead moments into the third frame, after recording an interception, as Medlock hooked up with Jonnu Smith on a 38-yard TD pass play to make the score 9-7.

A little over midway through the quarter Fischer responded with a 30-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 12-7.

In the fourth the Bulldogs finally pushed the ball into the end zone as Higgins hit Dixon with a 39-yard TD pass to cap a five-play, 51-yard drive that took less than two minutes.

Four minutes later Fischer lined up for his fifth field goal of the night and made good on another 35-yard effort to put the game out of reach for Louisiana Tech.

FIU was held to just 197 yards of total offense as the team failed to capitalize on three interceptions by the defense, two of which were supplied by Justin Halley.

The victory was the first for the Bulldogs in the state of Florida since 1999 when quarterback Tim Rattay threw for 561 yards in a 46-35 triumph over Central Florida.
