NCAA Game Summary - Old Dominion at North Carolina

(Saturday, November 23)

Final Score: North Carolina 80, Old Dominion 20

Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - On a record-setting afternoon, Marquise Williams led the way with five touchdowns and 408 yards on 20-of-27 passing, to go along with 60 yards rushing, as the North Carolina Tar Heels destroyed the Old Dominion Monarchs, 80-20, in a non-conference clash at Kenan Memorial Stadium.

For the Tar Heels (6-5), T.J. Logan finished with 137 yards rushing and three scores on 14 carries. Quinshad Davis pulled in four receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan Switzer added 117 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. The Tar Heels became bowl-eligible with their fifth consecutive victory.

Taylor Heinicke led the Monarchs (8-4) with just 130 yards and a touchdown on 14-of-31 passing. Gerard Johnson ran for 143 yards on nine carries, while Colby Goodwin finished with 55 yards and a score on 10 attempts.

The Tar Heels got the scoring started early, as Williams connected with Davis on a 56-yard scoring strike just over a minute into the game. After scoring on a 37-yard field goal, the Monarchs took the 10-7 lead on a four-yard rushing touchdown by Goodwyn with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter.

UNC quickly answered when Williams hooked up with T.J. Thorpe just 38 seconds later on a 27-yard touchdown pass that put the home team back up 14-10. The Monarchs added a 40-yard field goal late in the first to cut the lead to 14-13.

The second quarter was dominated by the Tar Heels. First, Logan ran it in from the one in the opening minute of the period, then Williams hit on another big play, this one a 43-yard scoring pass to Switzer just a few minutes later. Williams and Switzer connected again for another huge play on a 57-yard touchdown pass midway through the quarter. Logan notched another one-yard TD run for the hosts, followed by a 16-yard TD pass to Kendrick Singleton to make the score 49-13 at the break.

In the second half the Tar Heels continued to pile on, scoring five times in the third quarter, including four touchdowns. The run started with a 28-yard rushing score by Khris Francis, although ODU did interrupt the streak when Heinicke found Taylor for a two-yard scoring pass at the 12:27 mark of the third to make the score 56-20.

On the ensuing kickoff Logan raced 99 yards to the end zone for the hosts, to offset the latest score by the Monarchs.

The Tar Heels then added a 38-yard field goal by Thomas Moore, followed by a 63-yard TD run by Logan and a 64-yard punt return for a score by Switzer.

The Tar Heels took the foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over on downs by kneeling down late in the game in the red zone. By mutual agreement of the coaches, the fourth quarter was shortened from 15 minutes to 10.

The Tar Heels set all-time team highs in points, yards (721) and touchdowns (11) in a game, while Williams set the single-game record for total yards with 469. The point total for the game was the second-most in ACC history, surpassed only by Clemson's 82 in 1981 against Wake Forest. The Tar Heels outscored ODU 35-0 in the second quarter, also tying the school record for points in a quarter.
