NCAA Game Summary - Oregon at Arizona

(Saturday, November 23rd)

Final Score: Arizona 42, (5) Oregon 16

Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Ka'Deem Carey marched his way into the record books, rushing for 206 yards and scoring four times on 48 carries, as Arizona knocked off No. 5 Oregon, 42-16, on Saturday.

Carey set a new school record for career rushing scores (49), surpassing the old record of 48 first set by Art Luppino from 1953-56, and also boosted his program-best rushing yardage to 3,913 and eclipsing the mark previously held by Trung Canidate (1996-99).

B.J. Denker contributed 178 yards and two TDs on 19-of-22 efficiency and 102 rushing yards on 14 carries for the Wildcats (7-4, 4-4 Pac-12), who bested their conference foes for the first time since 2007 and picked up one of the biggest wins for the program in recent memory.

Nate Phillips and Terrence Miller added receiving scores for Arizona, which knocked off a top-5 opponent for the first time since taking down the Ducks six years ago.

"Well, that was fun. It was a great way for our seniors to go out. We executed well and we tried to make them earn everything. B.J. was sharp and Ka'Deem was Ka'Deem. I think he's the best back in the country. This was a great opportunity and we took advantage of it. We were really dialed in the whole game," said Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez

Marcus Mariota completed 27-of-41 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off twice for the Ducks (9-2, 6-2), who stumbled to their second loss in three weeks and fell into second place in the North Division after Stanford completed its 63-13 demolition of California.

"From an offensive standpoint, we had a really good set of meetings this morning. Obviously how we started, very sluggish in every phase, that is 100 percent my fault," said Oregon coach Mark Helfrich. "I have to figure out exactly which levers to pull and which buttons to push on. We have to give Arizona a ton of credit, they were playing really hot today and their system worked really well."

Mariota's year-plus run of without a pick (353 attempts) ended on Oregon's opening series, as Bralon Addison dropped the ball and Shaquille Richardson came up with the rebound while falling to the sideline before flipping it back to a teammate.

Arizona, set up on the Ducks' 45, a clicked on the following drive thanks to Carey's 6-yard run to paydirt. It was 14-0 on the hosts' ensuing series as Denker's 9-yard TD pass to Phillips which followed Oregon's three-and-out capped a 59-yard series in 10 plays.

Oregon responded with a 12-play drive ending on a 33-yard make from Matt Wogan, but the Wildcats came back to extend their lead to 21-3 early in the second as Denker connected with Miller for a 5-yard score.

Mariota followed with a one-yard TD pass to Pharaoah Brown, but the two-point conversion rush by Wogan failed, leaving the Ducks down 21-9. Oregon turned the ball over on its next touch when Thomas Tyner fumbled, and though Arizona failed to convert, it did so on its next touch after another Ducks miscue.

Mariota recovered his own fumble short of the marker on a 4th-and-2 from the Wildcats' 41, and the hosts needed just six plays to take a 28-9 edge to the break after Carey sauntered in from one yard away with 18 seconds left.

Oregon turned the ball over on downs and then went three-and-out on its first two possessions of the third quarter. Arizona made their foes pay after the second failed drive, entering the fourth ahead 35-9 after Carey's 9-yard scoring run ended a 70-yard sequence on the ninth play.

Mariota's 2-yard pass to Huff inside the first minute of the final period proved to be the visitors' final serious offensive foray.

It was 42-16 for the hosts as Carey and Denker combined to run for 75 yards on the ensuing possession, with the former capping the drive and earning his milestone rushing TD with another 1-yard plunge on 3rd-and-goal.

The Ducks reached the Wildcats' 13-yard line with roughly six minutes remaining, but Richardson picked off Mariota once more, this time a less spectacular effort down near the goal line.

Arizona picked up two first downs and whittled away the final 5:40 of regulation.
