NCAA Game Summary - Michigan at Northwestern

(Saturday, November 16)

Final Score: Michigan 27, Northwestern 19 (3OT)

Evanston, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Devin Gardner scored two overtime touchdowns, as the Michigan Wolverines outlasted the Northwestern Wildcats in three extra sessions, 27-19, in Big Ten Conference action at Ryan Field.

Gardner completed 24-of-43 passes for 226 yards, threw a touchdown pass and ran another one in for Michigan (7-3, 3-3 Big Ten). Jeremy Gallon tallied 10 receptions for 115 yards, and Derrick Green rushed for 79 yards on 19 carries.

For Northwestern (4-6, 0-6), Trevor Siemian threw for 137 yards on 16-of-25 passing, while Kain Colter had 26 passing yards, 78 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Brandon Gibbons knocked through a 25-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to give Michigan an early lead, although Northwestern answered later in the frame on a 40-yarder by Jeff Budzien to tie the score.

Things remained quiet until the waning seconds of the first half, when the Wildcats capped off an 11-play, 56-yard drive with a 22-yard Budzien field goal to go into intermission with a 6-3 lead.

Northwestern drove deep into Michigan territory late in the third quarter, moving 77 yards in 10 plays, but it again had to settle for a short Budzien field goal (29 yards).

The Wolverines chipped into their deficit early in the fourth with a 28-yarder by Gibbons. They received excellent field position on the Northwestern 10-yard line following a poor punt, but they actually lost yardage on the drive before settling for three.

Michigan began its final drive of regulation with 2:18 left, and after completing a pair of fourth downs to keep the drive alive, Gibbons nailed a 44-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime.

The first touchdown of the game came in the opening possession of the first overtime, as Gardner hooked up with Jake Butt on an 11-yard score. Northwestern answered back on its possession when Colter snuck into the end zone from one yard out.

The squads exchanged field goals in the second overtime, with Budzien connecting on a 36-yader and Gibbons making good from 29 yards away.

Gardner scored on a five-yard touchdown rush to open the third extra session and followed that up by running in the two-point attempt. Northwestern faced a 4th-and-long on its drive and could not convert as the Wolverines held on to win.

Michigan survived despite a dreadful afternoon on third down (2-of-18).
