NCAA Game Summary - Purdue at Penn State

(Saturday, November 16)

Final Score: Penn State 45, Purdue 21

University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Zach Zwinak ran for 149 yards and tied a career high with three rushing touchdowns, as the Penn State Nittany Lions cruised to a 45-21 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Ten Conference play at Beaver Stadium.

Bill Belton added 81 rushing yards and a score for the Nittany Lions (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten), who have not lost back-to-back games under coach Bill O'Brien since last year's 0-2 start. Christian Hackenberg completed 16-of-23 passes for 212 yards and accounted for two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) and one interception.

The Boilermakers (1-9, 0-6) suffered their seventh consecutive loss, thanks mostly to a leaky defense and three turnovers on offense. Quarterback Danny Etling was 21-of-33 for 223 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked six times, while Purdue's offensive line paved the way for only 41 team rushing yards on 20 attempts (2.0 ypc).

Penn State opened the game with a 13-play, 75-yard drive, which Belton finished off with a five-yard touchdown run to stake the Nittany Lions an early 7-0 lead.

Later in the opening frame, Zwinak capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive with a one- yard touchdown plunge to make it a 14-0 game.

Purdue got on the scoreboard at the 13:48 mark of the second quarter, when Etling found Justin Sinz for a two-yard scoring strike.

However, PSU answered right back with two more touchdowns. Zwinak scored on another one-yard run with 9:35 to play in the half, and Hackenberg pushed the lead to 28-7 on an eight-yard TD pass to Adam Breneman with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter.

But the Boilermakers would not go into the locker room quietly, as Raheem Mostert returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards to the house, trimming the margin to 28-14.

Etling made it a 28-21 game on an 11-yard TD scamper to finish off the opening drive of the second half.

Following a 29-yard field goal by PSU kicker Sam Ficken, the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 38-21 on the third rushing touchdown of the day by Zwinak, this time from five yards out with 5:21 remaining in the third quarter.

Hackenberg tacked on a four-yard rushing TD in the fourth quarter to seal Penn State's seventh straight win in the head-to-head series.

Zwinak now has 12 rushing TDs on the year, the first Penn State player since 2008 to rush for double-digit touchdowns in a season. Wideout Allen Robinson finished with eight catches for 98 yards and broke his own Nittany Lions single-season receptions record.
