NCAA Game Summary - Texas Tech at Kansas

(Saturday, October 5th)

Final Score: (20) Texas Tech 54, Kansas 16

Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - The 20th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders rolled past the Kansas Jayhawks by a 54-16 margin on Saturday, but lost starting quarterback Baker Mayfield to an injury in the process.

Mayfield completed 33-of-51 passes for 368 yards and an interception before suffering an apparent right knee injury at the end of the third quarter. Davis Webb came on in relief and connected on 3-of-6 passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns.

Kenny Williams carried the ball 12 times for 42 yards and a score for the Red Raiders (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), who are off to a 5-0 start for the first time since the 2008 season. DeAndre Washington rushed for 16 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Eric Ward caught seven passes for 122 yards and a score for Texas Tech, which improved to 14-1 all-time against Kansas. Jace Amaro hauled in nine passes for 96 yards.

Jake Heaps completed 16-of-32 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Jayhawks (2-2, 0-1), who went 0-9 in Big 12 play in 2012.

"We just couldn't get any drives mounted," Heaps said. "It was the little mistakes that were just killing our drives and you can't win football games doing those things."

Tony Pierson caught six passes for 118 yards for Kansas.

Texas Tech actually got off to a slow start, with Ben Heeney intercepting Mayfield on the fourth play of the game. Kansas turned the interception into a 36-yard Matthew Wyman field goal.

The Jayhawks scored a touchdown on their next possession. Pierson's 25-yard catch on third down set up Jimmay Mundine's 25-yard TD catch.

Texas Tech's struggles continued near the end of the first quarter. Ryan Bustin missed a 32-yard field goal after the Red Raiders moved the ball inside the red zone.

"Sometimes it just takes a while to get started, because you're just waking up, you've got an early wake-up call," Ward said of the team's slow start. "Just getting started is the hardest part, but when we get in our groove and get things going then we're on a roll."

The Red Raiders finally came alive in the second stanza. In the early stages of the frame, Bustin capped a 14-play drive with a 23-yard field goal.

After Kansas went three-and-out, Williams rumbled into the end zone from one yard out to make it 10-10.

The Jayhawks were unable to get off a punt on their next possession. Punter Trevor Pardula was tackled for no gain at the Kansas 16-yard line. Two plays later, Mayfield used his legs to score from 19 yards out.

Bustin made a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the half, making it a 20-10 contest.

Texas Tech tacked on 17 more points in the third period. Heaps was intercepted by J.J. Gaines on the first play of the second half. Washington's 4-yard TD run made it 27-10.

After Bustin made a 28-yard field goal, Washington scored from five yards out to make it a 37-10 game.

Mayfield got hurt on the final play of the third quarter. Webb came on in relief and hooked up with Ward for a 25-yard score.

Bustin's 31-yard field goal and Dylan Cantrell's 4-yard TD catch made it 54-10.

Kansas finally scored again when Michael Cummings and Andrew Turzilli hooked up for a 28-yard score with 7:43 to play.

Game Notes
