NCAA Game Summary - Hawaii at Nevada

(Saturday, September 21)

Final Score: Nevada 31, Hawaii 9

Reno, NV (Sports Network) - Tyler Stewart threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns as the Nevada Wolf Pack knocked off the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 31-9, in the Mountain West Conference opener at Mackay Stadium.

Stewart completed 14-of-20 pass attempts in the contest for Nevada (2-2, 1-0 MWC) in his first career start. Regular starter Cody Fajardo was once again sidelined with a knee injury. Kolby Arendse caught four passes for 77 yards and a score and Kendall Brock led the way on the ground with 69 yards on 15 carries.

Four different players saw time at quarterback for Hawaii (0-3, 0-1). Taylor Graham had the most attempts, completing 9-of-15 for 77 yards. Sean Schroeder (8-of-14, 74 yards, TD, two INTs), Jeremy Higgins (5-of-11, 51 yards) and Ikaika Woolsey (2-of-5, 41 yards, two INTs) also contributed. Chris Gant caught four passes for 42 yards and a score while Diocemy Saint Juste had 83 yards on 12 carries.

It was Hawaii that got on the board first. On its first offensive possession, Tyler Hadden finished a 14-play drive with a 28-yard field goal.

The Wolf Pack answered right back and took the lead on their next drive with a five-yard touchdown pass from Stewart to Arendse.

Stewart and Arendse connected on a two-yard touchdown strike on the first play of the second quarter, as the Wolf Pack's lead grew to 14-3.

Later in the period, Nevada drove the ball to the Hawaii three-yard line but was unable to punch it in for a touchdown. Instead Nevada settled for a 21- yard field goal from Brent Zuzo.

Hawaii was able to cut into the deficit before halftime with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Schroeder to Gant. However the extra point attempt failed, leaving the Rainbow Warriors down 17-9.

Brandon Wimberly helped Nevada extend its lead early in the third quarter when he brought in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Stewart.

Early in the fourth quarter the Wolf Pack struck for the final time when Alex Bertrando recovered and returned a fumble by Higgins two yards for a touchdown.

Hawaii lost despite having more yards of total offense than Nevada (376-340). Nevada had just 10 first downs in the contest but also had just one turnover while forcing six.
