NCAA Game Summary - Texas at West Virginia

(Saturday, November 9)

Final Score: Texas 47, West Virginia 40 (OT)

Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Case McCoy threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning score in overtime, as the Texas Longhorns outlasted the West Virginia Mountaineers, 47-40, in a Big 12 Conference shootout at Milan Puskar Stadium.

McCoy completed 27-of-49 passes and threw an interception for Texas (7-2, 6-0 Big 12), which has won six straight games and, along with Baylor, remains one of two unbeaten teams in Big 12 play. Malcolm Brown had 28 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown, while Mike Davis (three receptions, 91 yards, TD) and Jaxon Shipley (seven receptions, 82 yards, TD) were both impressive out wide.

For West Virginia (4-6, 2-5), Paul Millard completed 16-of-32 passes for 259 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, with his lone score finding the grasp of Mario Alford (four receptions, 97 yards). Charles Sims had 93 yards and three touchdowns on 24 rushes.

West Virginia took control of the game three minutes in when it blocked a punt deep in Longhorns' territory, which was recovered by Texas in its own end zone for a safety. The Mountaineers scored on their ensuing possession as well, with Sims rushing in a three-yard touchdown to put them up, 9-0.

Texas responded with 10 straight points to take the lead. After Anthony Fera kicked a 37-yard field goal late in the first quarter, Malcolm Brown rushed in a two-yard touchdown at the 10:48 mark of the second quarter.

The Mountaineers went back on top less than four minutes later on a six-yard touchdown rush by Sims. The teams exchanged field goals before the half was out. Fera made a 25-yarder for the Longhorns with under five minutes to play, and Josh Lambert connected on a 30-yarder for West Virginia in the waning seconds before intermission.

Texas cut its deficit to three, 19-16, at the 10:19 mark of the third quarter following another Fera field goal, this time from 29 yards out. The Longhorns had outstanding field position at the West Virginia 21-yard line following a Millard interception but actually lost yards before settling for three points.

West Virginia extended its lead on the very next possession, marching 91 yards in nine plays, with Sims capping off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

The Longhorns answered with a long drive on their own, and following an eight- play, 75-yard possession, McCoy hooked up with Davis on a 49-yard touchdown to bring the game back within three points, 26-23.

After forcing West Virginia to go three-and-out, Texas retook the lead in the waning seconds of the third quarter when Joe Bergeron rushed in an eight-yard score.

The Mountaineers wasted no time getting back on top, as Dreamius Smith ran in a touchdown from eight yards out with 14:01 left in the game, but Texas regained the advantage less than five minutes later on a 10-yard scoring strike from McCoy to Shipley.

The back-and-forth bout continued not two minutes later, as Millard completed a 72-yard touchdown pass to Alford to give the Mountaineers the lead back.

After Texas completed a 4th-and-7 near midfield to keep its final drive of regulation alive, Anthony Fera knocked through a 24-yard field goal to force overtime.

In the first possession of the extra session, McCoy completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Alex De La Torre. After West Virginia drove inside the 10- yard line on the first play of its possession, it failed to score as Millard's fourth-down pass was intercepted, giving the Longhorns the victory.

Texas scored on all eight of its red zone drives (four touchdowns, four field goals), converted 10-of-23 third-down attempts and had more than 31 minutes of possession time.
