NCAA Game Summary - Georgia Tech at Duke

(Saturday, September 14)

Final Score: Georgia Tech 38, Duke 14

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Durham native Vad Lee had a stellar homecoming as he accounted for 212 offensive yards and five touchdowns for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as they coasted to a 38-14 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both sides at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Lee completed 8-of-16 pass attempts for 129 yards and four scores and also led the Yellow Jackets (2-0) in rushing with 83 yards on 23 attempts. Robert Godhigh reeled in four catches for a team-high 61 yards and a touchdown while two of junior wideout DeAndre Smelter's three catches resulted in six points. David Sims gained 61 yards on 14 carries in the win. Georgia Tech was coming off of a bye week which followed its season-opening 70-0 rout of Elon.

With starting quarterback Anthony Boone out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, Duke (2-1) suffered its first loss of the campaign with Brandon Connette starting under center. Connette finished with 122 yards on 14-of-27 efficiency with no touchdowns or interceptions. He did account for one of the team's two touchdowns with a rushing score. Jamison Crowder led the Blue Devils with six receptions which yielded only 40 yards. Jela Duncan amassed 91 yards on 16 carries and Kelby Brown registered a career-high 17 total tackles in the setback.

After a short punt gave them great starting field position for their opening drive, the Yellow Jackets drove 19 yards to put Harrison Butker in position for a 49-yard field goal which put them in front by three.

Duke responded with a nine-play, 72-yard drive that was concluded by a one- yard touchdown run by Duncan at the 9:14 mark of the opening quarter. Georgia Tech came right back with a seven-play, 79-yard drive that Lee punctuated with a four-yard touchdown rush. Neither side managed to score again in the first quarter as the Blue Devils were stopped on fourth-and-one in opposing territory and Georgia Tech went three-and-out on the next two possessions.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead through the air in the second quarter. Lee's first five pass attempts fell incomplete, but he connected with Smelter for a 24-yard touchdown pass with just over 10 minutes left in the second quarter on his sixth throw. Lee connected with Smelter on a 10-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute before halftime to send Georgia Tech into the third quarter with a 24-7 lead.

Georgia Tech scored the first points of the second half as Lee completed a 13- yard touchdown pass to Godhigh. After being held scoreless for 39 minutes and 17 seconds, the Blue Devils ended the Yellow Jackets' 28-0 run with a seven-yard touchdown rush by Connette just seconds into the fourth quarter.

Lee added his fourth touchdown pass with just over two minutes left in regulation as he found Zach Laskey for a 19-yard touchdown.

Georgia Tech held a 29-13 advantage in first downs achieved and racked up 496 yards of total offense to Duke's 252. The Yellow Jackets finished the contest with 11 third down conversions and the Blue Devils managed to pass the sticks on third down only three times.

Georgia Tech has won 10 in a row versus Duke and now holds a 50-30-1 all-time lead in the rivalry's history.
