NCAA Game Summary - Ball State at Virginia

(Saturday, October 5)

Final Score: Ball State 48, Virginia 27

Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ball State Cardinals were led by Jahwan Edwards' three rushing scores as they defeated the Virginia Cavaliers, 48-27, in non-conference action at Scott Stadium.

Cardinals' (5-1) quarterback Keith Wenning went 23-for-41 through the air with 346 yards and three scores (one rushing). Edwards finished with 155 on 24 carries, while Jordan Williams led the visiting team in receiving with nine catches, 159 yards and a score. Willie Snead was also impressive out wide with six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown.

The Cavaliers (2-3) were not as successful in the passing game. David Watford went 21-of-36 with 209 yards, one interception and zero touchdowns. Kevin Parks led the way in rushing with 104 yards and two scores on 16 attempts. Keeon Johnson had three catches and 46 yards.

Virginia struck first with a 39-yard field goal from Alec Vozenilek midway through the first quarter.

Ball State answered less than two minutes later with a three-yard touchdown rush by Edwards.

Virginia went on to score 14 unanswered points, the first touchdown coming on a two-yard rush from Parks, with Watford adding a 27-yard run at the beginning of the second quarter.

The Cardinals countered with three consecutive scores. Scott Secor connected on a 21-yard field goal with 11:48 to play in the second quarter. Their next score was an 11-yard touchdown toss from Wenning to Willie Snead later in the frame.

On Ball State's second drive of the second half, Wenning scored a touchdown on a one-yard run.

Parks scored on the Cavaliers' next drive by running in a two-yard touchdown to tie the game up.

With 1:26 remaining in the third quarter, Edwards rushed for a 32-yard touchdown to put Ball State up, 31-24.

A bad kickoff went out of bounds to give Virginia great starting field position for their next drive, but it failed to capitalize after Jake McGee fumbled the ball on the first play, giving the Cardinals the ball back. This led to a 45-yard field goal by Secor eight seconds into the final period of play.

With 10:41 remaining, Virginia was able to put up three points as Vozenilek connected on a 38-yard field goal, brining the Cavaliers to within seven, 34-27, but it would be their final points of the afternoon.

Ball State quickly widened the gap on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Wenning to Williams. Edwards ran for his third touchdown of the day on a 17-yard run later in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Virginia came into Saturday's matchup averaging only 5.5 penalties per game, but it was flagged 13 times for 93 yards on the afternoon.
