NCAA Game Summary - Wake Forest at Vanderbilt

(Saturday, November 30)

Final Score: Vanderbilt 23, Wake Forest 21

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Carey Spear's 38-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining lifted the Vanderbilt Commodores to a 23-21 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in non-conference play from Vanderbilt Stadium.

Austyn Carta-Samuels completed 24-of-33 passes for 231 yards with one touchdown and one interception to help the Commodores (8-4) notch their fourth straight victory and secure consecutive eight-win regular seasons for the first time since 1927-28. Jordan Matthews hauled in a game-high 11 passes for 125 yards for the Commodores, who also beat Tennessee in the final seconds last weekend.

Tanner Price threw for 155 yards and also ran for a game-high 47 yards and a touchdown for the Demon Deacons (4-8), who concluded their season with five straight losses.

Vanderbilt opened the game with an 11-play, 88-yard drive, which Carta-Samuels ended with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Fitz Lassing.

Wake Forest answered with a 12-play scoring drive, as Price found the end zone on a three-yard scamper to make it a 7-7 game.

Vanderbilt regained the lead midway through the second quarter on Patton Robinette's eight-yard TD scamper.

But the Demon Deacons once again responded with a long scoring drive, this time capped by Dominique Gibson's nine-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14-14.

Vanderbilt went into the locker room with a 17-14 halftime lead following Spear's 41-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play in the half.

The Demon Deacons defense accounted for the only points of the third quarter, as Justin Jackson stepped in front of a Carta-Samuels pass and returned it 63 yards the other way for a touchdown to put Wake Forest on top, 21-17.

Vandy's offense occupied a chunk of the fourth quarter with a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ate up more than seven minutes. However, the drive eventually stalled and the Commodores had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Spear to make it a 21-20 game with 6:58 to play.

Vandy's final drive was kept alive by a 25-yard catch by Matthews on 4th- and-11, which he made at the Wake Forest 23-yard line with two defenders draped on him.

The Commodores were a perfect 4-for-4 on fourth down and they finished with a 403-266 edge in total offense.
