NCAA Game Summary - Army at Boston College

(Saturday, October 5)

Final Score: Boston College 48, Army 27

Chestnut Hill, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andre Williams ran for a career-high 263 yards and scored five touchdowns as he led the Boston College Eagles to a commanding 48-27 win over the Army Black Knights in non-conference action.

Williams, who carried the ball 30 times, tied the Boston College (3-2) single- game record for rushing touchdowns set by Montel Harris against NC State in 2009. Harris also established the program record for rushing yards in a game during that outing as well with 264.

The Eagles ran for a total of 320 yards, while Chase Rettig completed all but two of his 13 pass attempts for another 208 yards and a score through the air as well.

Larry Dixon led the way for the Black Knights (2-4) with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 11 rushing attempts, the team posting 351 yards on 65 carries. Quarterback Angel Santiago left the game with an injury, but not before converting 2-of-3 for 87 yards and a score, an 80-yard effort to Xavier Moss.

The teams traded scores through the first quarter of play, with Army kicker Dan Grochowski starting things off with a 38-yard field goal to cap the opening drive of the afternoon.

Later in the first Rettig responded by combining with David Dudeck on a three- yard TD pass play to give the Eagles an early 7-3 edge.

Army regained the lead on the very next play from scrimmage when Moss raced into the end zone on that 80-yard play from Santiago.

Williams began to make an impact for the hosts at the 5:19 mark of the first period when he broke out for a 34-yard TD run. In the second quarter he added touchdowns of one and 37 yards as well, although Dixon did interrupt that stretch of dominance with a three-yard TD run of his own for Army just 20 seconds into the second.

Trailing by a score of 28-17 with nine minutes remaining before intermission, the Knights put together a 17-play, 67-yard drive that ate up more than eight minutes on the clock, but the team had to settle for a 40-yard field goal.

With a short field, BC countered the Grochowski field goal with one of 49 yards at the conclusion of the first half by Nate Freese to make the score 31-20.

Just over two minutes into the third quarter the Black Knights again cut into the lead when Dixon logged an 80-yard TD run, drawing the visitors to within four with plenty of time remaining.

Unfortunately, Army's offense was never heard from again as the Eagles closed with 17 unanswered points, thanks to touchdowns of three and 34 yards by Williams in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, as well as a 28-yard field goal from Freese.

The Black Knights controlled the ball for close to 22 minutes in the first half and finished with 457 yards of total offense on 76 snaps, but at the same time surrendered 528 yards to Boston College on 22 fewer plays.

Army, along with the other two service academies (Navy and Air Force) which compete at the FBS level, was in jeopardy of having this weekend's game canceled due to the government shutdown, but the Department of Defense eventually gave the go-ahead for the schools to return to the football field.
