Samford coach Sullivan to miss opener

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Samford football coach Pat Sullivan will miss the team's season-opening game at Georgia State on Friday while continuing to recover from back surgery.

Sullivan had a cervical fusion last month to reduce chronic back pain.

"I will not be able to travel to our game this Friday," Sullivan said. "I am still recovering from back surgery. I know our staff will do a wonderful job. I look forward to being back soon."

Sullivan missed time last season because of pneumonia.

He has a 32-34 record in six seasons at Samford.
