NCAA Game Summary - Georgia Tech at North Carolina

(Saturday, November 10)

Final Score: Georgia Tech 68, North Carolina 50

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Vad Lee ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns and threw for one more, as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets outlasted the North Carolina Tar Heels, 68-50, in an Atlantic Coast Conference barn-burner at Kenan Memorial Stadium.

The 118 combined points marked the highest-scoring game in ACC history.

Robert Godhigh ran for two touchdowns and caught a third to help the Yellow Jackets (5-5, 4-3 ACC) win for the 13th time in the last 15 meetings with UNC.

The Tar Heels (6-4, 3-3) suffered their first home loss of the season, despite 350 yard passing and two touchdowns from Bryn Renner. Quinshad Davis caught seven passes for 104 yards and a score in the loss.

Bernard opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run on the game's third play from scrimmage. The quick TD was set up by a 47-yard completion from Renner to Erik Highsmith on the previous play.

It took Georgia Tech just two minutes to respond, as Tevin Washington broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown run.

UNC took a 14-7 lead at the 6:14 mark of the first quarter, when A.J. Blue finished off a nine-play, 93-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

Once again, Georgia Tech had an answer on its very next offensive series. Lee scored on a one-yard run to cap a 12-play, 70-yard drive and tie the score at 14-14 with 1:56 to play in the opening frame.

An 11-yard TD scamper by David Sims gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-14 advantage with 10:08 remaining in the second quarter.

UNC got the ball back and moved 94 yards in 11 plays, with Romar Morris finding the end zone on a 30-yard run through the middle of the Tech defense.

The seesaw battle continued on the Yellow Jackets' next possession, which lasted only five plays as Lee scored another one-yard rushing TD.

However, the Tar Heels would take a 29-28 lead into halftime thanks to Blue's five-yard touchdown scamper with 27 seconds remaining in the half. Tommy Hibbard connected with Jack Tabb for the two-point conversion.

GT began the second half with a bang, as Jamal Golden returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. The Yellow Jackets went for two but did not convert as they led, 34-29.

Not to be outdone, UNC's first play of the second half resulted in a long touchdown as Bernard scored on a 78-yard catch and run to make it a 36-34 game.

However, Georgia Tech began to take control by scoring the game's next 24 points. Godhigh scored on a four-yard run with just under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter. After a 35-yard field goal by Chris Tanner at the 7:42 mark, Godhigh scored again on a 27-yard run to make it a 51-36 game with 6:21 remaining in the frame. Three minutes later, Godhigh scored yet again on a 32- yard catch from Lee.

Renner stopped the bleeding for UNC with an 11-yard scoring strike to Davis at the 1:09 mark of the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 58-43.

The Tar Heels defense tightened things up further when Tim Scott stepped in front of a Lee pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown, making it a 58-50 game with 14:51 to play in regulation.

GT answered with a seven-play, 81-yard drive, capped by Orwin Smith's 22-yard touchdown scamper to stretch the margin to 65-50 with 11:02 to play. Tanner added a 34-yard field goal in the closing minutes to account for the final score.

The Yellow Jackets converted 9-of-15 third downs for the game and finished with 588 yards of total offense.
