NCAA Game Summary - Eastern Michigan at Penn State

(Saturday, September 7)

Final Score: Penn State 45, Eastern Michigan 7

University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Akeel Lynch and Bill Belton both ran for 108 yards while combining for three touchdowns, as the Penn State Nittany Lions claimed a 45-7 win over the Eastern Michigan Eagles in non-conference action at Beaver Stadium.

Belton and Zach Zwinak both notched two rushing touchdowns on the day, while Allen Robinson hauled in seven passes for 129 yards and a score. Christian Hackenberg completed 23-of-33 passes for 311 yards to help the Nittany Lions improve to 2-0 after knocking off Syracuse in their season opener.

Tyler Benz was 17-of-26 for only 115 yards for the Eagles (1-1), who were coming off last week's come-from-behind win over Howard.

The Eagles got the scoring started thanks to their defense. Hunter Matt sacked Hackenberg and jarred the ball loose, then he scooped it up and ran 11 yards into the end zone to stake EMU a 7-0 lead at the 4:01 mark of the first quarter.

Penn State answered right back with a six-play, 67-yard drive, capped Zwinak's two-yard touchdown run.

It was all Penn State from there. The Nittany Lions defense forced a three- and-out on the next series, and the offense followed that up with another six- play drive that covered 68 yards. This time, Belton found the end zone on a five-yard scamper to put PSU on top, 14-7.

PSU's Sam Ficken tacked on a 39-yard field goal just before halftime to send the Nittany Lions into the locker room with a 17-7 lead at the break. It marked a school-record 14th consecutive field goal made for Ficken.

A seven-yard touchdown run by Zwinak accounted for the only points of the third quarter.

The Nittany Lions began to pull away in the fourth. Hackenberg found Robinson for a 45-yard scoring strike at the 12:25 mark to make it a 31-7 game. Belton cemented the outcome with a 51-yard touchdown run with 9:47 to play, and Lynch closed out the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run late in the contest.

PSU finished with a staggering 574-183 edge in total offense for the game. During halftime, Penn State officially retired John Cappelletti's No. 22 jersey, the first in program history.
