NCAA Game Summary - Rutgers at Connecticut

(Saturday, November 30)

Final Score: Connecticut 28, Rutgers 17

East Hartford, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey Cochran threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns, as the Connecticut Huskies rallied for a 28-17 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in American Athletic Conference play at Rentschler Field.

Max DeLorenzo ran for 52 yards and scored twice for the Huskies (2-9, 2-5 AAC) who have now won two in a row after dropping their first nine contests of the season. Deshon Foxx finished with nine catches for 117 yards.

Chas Dodd made his first start of the season for the Scarlet Knights (5-6, 2-5), who now must beat South Florida in next week's regular-season finale to become bowl eligible. Dodd threw for 286 yards on 16-of-35 passing and was intercepted twice by UConn cornerback Taylor Mack, the second of which came at the Huskies' 19-yard line in the final minutes.

Rutgers opened the game with a 13-play drive and then faked a 27-yard field goal, as holder J.T. Tartacoff found Tyler Kroft for a 10-yard touchdown pass to stake the Scarlet Knights an early 7-0 lead.

UConn answered right back with an eight-play, 79-yard drive, capped by Cochran's 18-yard scoring strike to Dhameer Bradley.

Scarlet Knights return man Quron Pratt lost a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and DeLorenzo eventually capitalized with a 12-yard touchdown run to make it a 14-7 game.

Rutgers cut the deficit to 14-10 following a 34-yard field goal from Kyle Federico in the final minute before halftime.

The Scarlet Knights regained the lead on Justin Goodwin's three-yard TD scamper, which marked the only points of the third quarter.

However, the fourth quarter belonged to the hosts. DeLorenzo's one-yard touchdown plunge at the 14:22 mark of the final frame put UConn back on top, 21-17. The Huskies tacked on another TD with 3:04 to play when Cochran found Brian Lemelle for a three-yard scoring strike to cap a 12-play drive.

UConn converted 9-of-15 third downs for the game and came away with touchdowns on all four of its trips inside the red zone.
