Woodard to remain Lamar coach in 2014

Beaumont, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Head football coach Ray Woodard has had his contract extended through the 2014 season.

Woodard signed a new three-year contract in 2011, but it was set to expire right before next season.

He has an 18-28 record through the first four seasons since Lamar revived a program that was dropped after the 1988 season. The Cardinals were 5-7 this past season, including 2-5 in the Southland Conference.

"Starting a program from the ground up is a different situation than taking over a program that has been struggling," athletic director Jason Henderson said. "There is a growth process that has to take place. We believe that this program his headed in the right direction under Coach Woodard, and we feel that this season is a step toward competing at the top of the Southland Conference, which is our ultimate goal."
