NCAA Game Summary - Louisiana Tech at NC State

(Saturday, August 31)

Final Score: NC State 40, Louisiana Tech 14

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Matt Dayes scored three rushing touchdowns as the NC State Wolfpack crushed the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 40-14, in the 2013 season opener at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Dayes carried the ball 17 times on the afternoon for the Wolfpack (1-0), generating a team-best 84 yards on the ground. Quarterback Pete Thomas, a transfer from Colorado State who sat out last season, converted 15-of-27 pass attempts for 212 yards, while starting quarterback Brandon Mitchell hit all three of his passes for 93 yards before exiting with a foot injury.

The Bulldogs (0-1) were paced by Kenneth Dixon who gained 118 yards and scored once on 22 carries, while Scotty Young finished 15-of-27 for 178 yards and was sacked twice.

NC State began the meeting with 24 unanswered points as Anthony Creecy scored on a three-yard run at the 12:27 mark of the first quarter. Dayes added a pair of two-yard scoring runs, one each in the first and the second frames, while Niklas Sade booted a 38-yard field goals early in the second to give the home team a huge advantage.

Before the end of the first half the Bulldogs finally put points on the board, courtesy of a one-yard touchdown run by Tevin King.

The only points of the third came from Sade who converted a 22-yard field goal to make the score 27-7.

Louisiana Tech responded less than a minute into the fourth quarter when Dixon crossed the goal line on a 12-yard run.

However, the Wolfpack closed out the meeting with 13 straight points as Sade connected on field goals of 45 and 24 yards, while Dayes tallied an 18-yard rushing touchdown, en route to the lopsided 26-point victory.

Louisiana Tech, which converted only 2-of-10 on third down, lost four fumbles on the day, two inside the red zone. The Bulldogs lost a total of just eight fumbles all of last season.

The Bulldogs, who have a new head coach in Skip Holtz, are coming off a 2012 campaign during which they led the nation in total offense (577.9 ypg) and scoring (51.5 ppg). The squad finished with only 321 yards today, while giving up 542 yards to the Pack.

Since opening last season with nine wins in 10 opportunities, LaTech has now dropped three straight decisions. The 14 points by the Bulldogs are the fewest since the squad bowed to Southern Miss back in 2010 by a score of 13-12.

NC State also has a new head coach for 2013 in Dave Doeren, who arrives in Raleigh after leading the Northern Illinois Huskies to two of their most successful campaigns in program history.
