Mackenzie, Svoboda share McGladrey lead

Sea Island, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Mackenzie carded a 5-under 65 in Saturday's third round and he moved into a share of the lead at The McGladrey Classic.

Mackenzie was joined at 12-under-par 198 by Andrew Svoboda, who posted a 4- under 66 on Saturday. Mackenzie will go for his third tour title on Sunday, while Svoboda is searching for his first PGA Tour win.

Second-round leader Russell Henley managed a 2-under 68 in round three. He dipped into third place at minus-11 on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Resort.

Stewart Cink fired a 7-under 63, the low round of the day, and he soared into a share of fourth place at 9-under-par 201. He was joined there by defending champion Chris Kirk (66), Brendon de Jonge (69), Fabian Gomez (68) and Andrew Putnam (66).

Mackenzie got off to a quick start with a 6-foot birdie putt at the first. After four pars in a row, he dunked his tee shot at the par-3 sixth for a hole-in-one and a share of the lead.

The two-time PGA Tour winner drained a 15-footer for birdie on No. 7 to move into the lead at minus-11.

Mackenzie fell out of the lead as he ran off eight straight pars from the eighth. After Henley bogeyed the 15th, Mackenzie made a 6-foot birdie try at 16 to grab the lead at 12-under.

At the par-3 17th, Mackenzie knocked his tee shot over the green and that led to a bogey, which dropped him one behind Svoboda. However, Mackenzie came right back with a 44-foot birdie putt at 18 to gain a share of the third-round lead.

"I was struggling with my speed out there. I made some clutch putts, but I was still nervous with the putter at times. I just wasn't letting it go, especially the putts I needed to make for birdie," Mackenzie said. "I need to stay balanced with my swing. When I visualize everything past impact, I really let it go and I start hitting it really solid."

Svoboda also opened with a birdie at the first, and he followed with six pars in a row. He followed a birdie on the eighth with another on No. 9, and that gave him a piece of the lead alongside Henley and Mackenzie at minus-11.

Around the turn, Svoboda knocked his second shot over the green at the 11th and hit a poor chip shot. That led to a double-bogey, which dropped him three behind Henley.

Svoboda started to climb back into the picture with a 23-foot birdie putt at the 13th. After a birdie at the par-5 15th, he drained another 23-footer for birdie at 17 to grab the lead at 12-under. Svoboda parred the last to end there.

"I played really well today. I kept the ball in the fairway and hit the ball great. I continued to roll the putter great," said Svoboda. "I had some great saves. I got up and down on three of the first four holes for par. They kept my round going positive. They were key."

Henley birdied the first and followed with six pars in a row. His 15-foot birdie effort on No. 8 moved him into a tie with Mackenzie at 11-under. Henley regained the solo lead with a birdie on the 11th.

However, Henley's second shot at the 15th found a hazard and that led to a bogey, which dropped him one back. He finished his round with three consecutive pars.

NOTES: Mackenzie had a piece of the 54-hole lead at the 2006 Barracuda Championship, where he went on to win ... Svoboda has a share of the 54-hole lead for the first time in his career ... Cink matched his career-low round on the PGA Tour ... Last week's winner Ben Martin carded a 5-under 65 in round three and he shares 12th place at 7-under 203 ... There are five former University of Georgia golfers in the top 20 - Henley, Kirk, Hudson Swafford, Kevin Kisner and Brendon Todd ... There was a secondary cut with 17 players failing to make it to the final round ... Among those 17 were Lucas Glover, Charles Howell III, Johnson Wagner and Nick Watney.
