NCAA Game Summary - North Carolina at Virginia

(Thursday, November 15th)

Final Score: North Carolina 37, Virginia 13

Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Bryn Renner was 29-for-36 with three touchdowns and 315 yards passing as North Carolina took a 37-13 win over Virginia in ACC action.

Quinshad Davis had 16 catches for 178 yards, Erik Highsmith caught two scores while Giovani Bernard caught the other for the Tar Heels (7-4, 4-3 ACC), who have won two of their last three.

Phillip Sims threw one touchdown and went 8-for-17 for 50 yards while Michael Rocco was 11-for-16 with an interception and 155 yards for the Cavaliers (4-7, 2-5), who had a two-game winning streak snapped and were eliminated from postseason contention.

North Carolina's second possession of the game saw the team put points on the board as a 10-play, 91-yard march saw Renner hit Highsmith for a 9-yard score and a 7-0 lead with 6:24 to play in the first.

Virginia countered with a scoring drive of its own, but only got three points after Drew Jarrett's 34-yard field goal was good inside the final minute of the first.

The Tar Heels came right back with a drive that spanned the quarters and A.J. Blue capped it with a 3-yard run into the end zone for a 14-3 lead less than a minute into the second.

It was a 14-10 game after the Cavaliers drove 67 yards in 14 plays with Sims hitting Jennings for a 9-yard score with 8:42 left in the half.

After Thomas Moore missed a 40-yard field goal on North Carolina's next possession, Tre Boston picked off a Rocco pass and returned it 36 yards for a score and a 20-10 lead after the team went for a 2-point conversion and failed.

The only points of the third quarter came on the opening drive when Virginia got a 28-yard field goal from Jarrett to make it a 20-13 game.

Later in the third, the Cavaliers got down to the UNC 8 to set up a 1st-and- goal. Three straight rushes got the ball down to the 1-yard line, but Kevin Parks was stuffed for a 2-yard loss on fourth down and the Tar Heels got the ball back at their own 3-yard line.

North Carolina effectively put the game away with a 12-play, 97-yard drive that started in the third quarter and ended three minutes into the fourth with Bernard hauling in a 23-yard touchdown catch for a 27-13 advantage.

Following a three-and-out from Virginia, the Tar Heels struck quick as the fifth play of the march saw Highsmith grab a 20-yard score for a 34-13 lead and Moore added a 30-yard field goal after the Cavaliers fumbled the ensuing kickoff.
