NCAA Game Summary - Penn State at Minnesota

(Saturday, November 9)

Final Score: Minnesota 24, Penn State 10

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - David Cobb ran for 139 yards and a touchdown, as the Minnesota Golden Gophers claimed a 24-10 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten Conference tussle at TCF Bank Stadium.

Cobb also tallied three catches for 30 yards in the win to help the Golden Gophers (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten) earn their fourth straight conference victory, a feat they have not accomplished since 1973. Philip Nelson threw for 186 yards and a TD, and he also ran for 40 yards and a score.

Zach Zwinak ran for a game-high 150 yards and a touchdown for the Nittany Lions (5-4, 2-3), who were unable to build on last week's overtime win against Illinois. Christian Hackenberg completed 14-of-25 passes for 163 yards, while Allen Robinson finished with seven catches for 63 yards.

Nittany Lions running back Bill Belton lost a fumble on the game's first play from scrimmage, which set Minnesota up with a first down on the PSU 29-yard line. But the Golden Gophers gained only one yard on that possession and had to settle for a 45-yard field goal from Chris Hawthorne.

Minnesota's defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and the offense got the ball back and put together a 15-play, 96-yard drive that consumed more than eight minutes. Cobb finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

Penn State answered right back with a six-play scoring drive, capped by Zwinak's 12-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10-7 at the 1:02 mark of the first quarter.

The Golden Gophers pushed the margin to 17-7 on Nelson's six-yard TD scamper with 9:08 to play until halftime.

Following a 27-yard field goal from PSU kicker Sam Ficken, the Gophers tacked on another touchdown just before the half as Nelson found Maxx Williams for a 24-yard scoring strike to make it a 24-10 game.

The score would remain that way until the final whistle, as both offenses struggled to move the ball over the final 30 minutes. PSU's offense produced two punts, two turnovers on downs and a lost fumble in its five second-half possessions.

With the win, Minnesota took back the Governor's Victory Bell that had belonged to Penn State for winning the previous four head-to-head meetings. These teams are not scheduled to play each other again until the 2016 season.
