Former Auburn TE killed in car crash

Auburn, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Philip Lutzenkirchen, a member of Auburn's 2010 BCS national championship team, died from injuries sustained in a car accident early Sunday morning near LaGrange, Georgia.

The Tigers' athletic department confirmed the news, with university athletic director Jay Jacobs calling Lutzenkirchen's death "a devastating tragedy for his family, the Auburn family and his countless friends."

Lutzenkirchen, who was 23 years old, played for the Tigers from 2009-12 and owns Auburn's all-time record for touchdown catches by a tight end (14), the most memorable of which capped a stunning comeback against bitter rival Alabama that kept Auburn undefeated during its 2010 national championship season.

The Georgia native finished his collegiate career with 59 catches totaling 628 yards.

"On the field, Philip was a great player and competitor, but more importantly, he was a great teammate and friend off the field," said Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. "My thoughts and prayers are with Philip's parents, Mike and Mary, and all of his family and friends who are grieving his passing. This is a sad day for the entire Auburn family."

Lutzenkirchen signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2013 but was cut during training camp.
