NCAA Game Summary - Wyoming at San Jose State

(Saturday, October 26)

Final Score: San Jose State 51, Wyoming 44

San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Fales erupted for 482 passing yards and a total of six touchdowns, including the game-winner with eight seconds remaining, as the San Jose State Spartans bounced back to claim a 51-44 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys in Mountain West Conference action at Spartan Stadium.

Fales converted 27-of-37 passes, leading to five touchdowns for the Spartans (4-3, 3-1 MWC) as they captured their third straight win. The quarterback also logged a rushing touchdown in the meeting, even though he was credited with negative eight rushing yards on seven carries.

Tyler Winston (nine catches, 171 yards), Billy Freeman (six for 119) and Chandler Jones (four for 129) were all crucial pieces in moving the ball and while Winston was able to get into the end zone once, Jones came up with three TDs on the night.

The Cowboys (4-4, 2-2), losers of two straight and three of the last four, were led by Brett Smith who converted 22-of-34 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, while Shaun Wick delivered a game-high 234 yards and a score on 17 rushing attempts. Robert Herron turned five receptions into 149 yards and a TD as well.

The Cowboys opened the contest on a 16-0 scoring run, thanks to a 43-yard field goal by Stuart Williams, a 93-yard TD pass from Smith to Herron and a one-yard TD run by Tedder Easton, although the PAT after the last score was blocked.

San Jose State responded less than a minute into the second quarter with a 76- yard TD pass from Fales to Jones.

However, Wyoming responded five minutes later with another TD, a 14-yard pass from Smith to Jake Maulhardt to push the score to 23-7.

Before the first half could end, the Spartans cut into the lead when Jones and Smith hooked up for an eight-yard TD, but still the hosts trailed by nine at the break.

The Pokes were able to push the lead back to double digits moments into the second half as Smith and Brandon Miller combined on an eight-yard TD pass play, but after that the home team put together a 22-0 scoring burst to take the lead.

The run for SJSU began with a 60-yard TD pass from Fales to Winston, continued with a nine-yard TD run by Tim Crawley and concluded with a three-yard strike from Fales to Shane Smith, followed by a successful two-point conversion to give the Spartans a 36-30 edge with 2:38 to play in the third.

The teams then proceeded to trade scores the rest of the way as Wick found the end zone on a 15-yard run for the Pokes, giving the lead back to the visitors at 37-36.

Just over two minutes later the momentum swung back to the Spartans when Fales and Jones locked up for a 30-yard TD pass play.

On their next possession, the Cowboys mounted an 11-play, 80-yard drive that consumed more than four minutes off the clock and ended with a one-yard TD run by Easton to tie the game at 44-44 with 5:17 to play.

Fales and the Spartans then went to work, both moving the ball and using up time and it was the one-yard TD by Fales in the final seconds that put the home team over the top.

San Jose State, which generated 642 yards of total offense, survived despite converting just 5-of-14 on third down. The teams combined for a staggering 1,241 yards of offense.

Wyoming entered the meeting having won six of the previous seven matchups in the series.
