Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Murphy threw for 173 yards and ran for another 118, accounting for a pair of touchdowns, as the Boston College Eagles took down the Massachusetts Minutemen, 30-7, in non-conference action at Gillette Stadium.

Murphy converted 17-of-24 passing and carried the ball 13 times for the Eagles (1-0) as they snapped a two-game slide from the end of last season. As a unit, BC ran for 338 yards, a considerable jump from the team's 212.5 ypg on the ground last season that had them ranked 20th in the nation.

The Minutemen (0-1) struggled on offense as quarterback Blake Frohnapfel completed only nine of his 22 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown. Tajae Sharpe was one of two players with a pair of receptions, finishing with a game-high 90 yards and a score in the setback.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles finally broke through as kicker Alex Howell knocked through a field goal from 44 yards out and Joey Launceford did the honors from 28 yards away, giving BC a 6-0 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter the Boston College offense finally got on track thanks to a one-yard touchdown run by Myles Willis at the 8:49 mark of the period and a one-yard score by Murphy less than six minutes later.

Trailing by 20, UMass went on the attack as Frohnapfel completed consecutive passes from his own side of midfield, the latter measuring 77 yards as Sharpe made it to the end zone to make the score 20-7.

Unfortunately for the Minutemen, Boston College responded almost immediately, needing just four plays and a 43-yard TD pass from Murphy to Josh Bordner to again push out to a sizeable advantage early in the fourth.

The Eagles finished off the meeting with a 21-yard field goal from Launceford midway through the fourth as they cruised to the comfortable 23-point triumph.

UMass, which recorded only nine first downs on the day, is coming off a 2013 campaign in which it won only once in 12 opportunities and ranked 121st in the country in scoring with just 11.7 ppg. The team was 120th in total offense, generating only 281.6 ypg.
