(Saturday, September 28)

Final Score: San Diego State 26, New Mexico State 16

Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - Donnel Pumphrey ran for a career-high 167 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, as the San Diego State Aztecs took down the New Mexico State Aggies, 26-16, in a non-conference battle at Aggie Memorial Stadium.

For the Aztecs (1-3), Quinn Kaehler threw for 229 yards on 22-of-34 passing, while Ezell Ruffin caught eight passes for 101 yards.

Andrew McDonald finished the night 23-of-35 with 228 yards and two touchdowns for the Aggies (0-5). Joshua Bowen caught six balls for 66 yards and a score while Brandon Betancourt was the team's leading rusher with just 32 yards on the ground as they lost their 16th consecutive game, the longest slide in the nation.

The Aggies struck first, moving the ball 68 yards in 10 plays and finishing with a six-yard touchdown pass from McDonald to Bowen to put them up 7-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter. They upped their lead to 10-0 with a 28-yard field goal from Maxwell Johnson with 5:12 to play in the first quarter.

The Aggies defense came up big early in the second, forcing a Kaehler fumble and recovering the ball at the Aztec 30-yard line. Two plays later McDonald found Andrew Dean for a 15-yard scoring strike. The extra point was blocked and returned by David Lamar for a defensive PAT, so NMSU had to settle for a 16-2 lead.

The Aztecs then scored 24 straight points, beginning with a 25-yard field goal by Wes Feer midway through the second frame that made the score 16-5 at the break.

The Aztecs put together a 14-play, 69-yard touchdown drive, with Pumphrey running it in from 12 yards out. After SDSU's two-point conversion failed, the score stood at 16-11 with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter. The Aztecs tacked on another score early in the fourth as Pumphrey crossed the goal line from two yards out. After successfully converting their two-point try, they Aztecs took their first lead of the game at 19-16.

Pumphrey's third score of the night, a 43-yard run, came with just 2:51 remaining in the contest. The SDSU defense forced a fumble by Bowen on the next series and the offense was able to run out the clock for the victory.

The Aztecs dominated the ground game, gaining 212 yards to just 40 for the hosts.

The last win for the Aggies came in the 2012 season opener against Sacramento State, 49-19.
