NCAA Game Summary - Arizona at UNLV

(Saturday, September 7)

Final Score: Arizona 58, UNLV 13

Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Ka'Deem Carey racked up 171 yards on 16 carries as the Arizona Wildcats picked up a 58-13 win over the UNLV Rebels in non-conference action at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Carey made his 2013 debut after missing the season opening 35-0 rout of Northern Arizona last week due to a suspension. He was the NCAA's leading rusher in 2012 with 1,929 yards. Carey didn't enter the game until the second quarter, but he and B.J. Denker scored two touchdowns apiece in the route for the Wildcats (2-0), who held a 25-to-10 advantage in first downs. Denker went 8-of-21 for 81 yards as a passer. Daniel Jenkins contributed 79 yards on 12 rushes while Jared Baker gained 66 yards on 12 carries.

Nick Sherry had a difficult time while under center for UNLV (0-2), completing only 6-of-22 attempts for 111 yards with one touchdown to two interceptions. Shaquille Murray-Lawrence gained a team-best 79 yards on four carries while Tim Cornett picked up 71 yards on 16 attempts. Devante Davis reeled in three passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in the loss for the Rebels, who have been outscored 109-35 through two games.

Arizona dominated the opening quarter en route to the blowout win. Jake Smith gave the Wildcats an early, 3-0 advantage with a 41-yard field goal. Denker scored on a 35-yard run with just over eight minutes left in the quarter and then again on a four-yard scamper at the 3:25 mark to give the visitors a 17-0 lead.

UNLV found the end zone moments into the second frame as Sherry completed a 69-yard touchdown pass to Davis. The Rebels trailed 17-6 after Nolan Kohorst's extra point try was unsuccessful.

Carey scored his first touchdown of the 2013 campaign moments later as he broke off a 58-yard run across the goal line. He scored again from 12 yards away at the 8:37 mark of the second quarter to give Arizona a 31-6 edge.

The Wildcats' defense stifled UNLV's attack the rest of the first half. Arizona added two more touchdowns as Sherry had interceptions returned for six points by Jake Fischer and Tra'Mayne Bondurant before the intermission.

The Rebels' defense played much better after halftime and limited Arizona to just a 29-yard field goal by Smith in the third quarter. Smith added another three points with a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. UNLV's offense was unable to get anything going until Murray-Lawrence took a handoff 79 yards for a touchdown with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Arizona answered right back with an 11-play, 84-yard drive that Kylan Butler concluded with a three-yard touchdown run. Smith's ensuing successful point try ended scoring with the Wildcats on top, 58-13.

UNLV was outgained, 478-to-282, in total yards of offense in the game. Arizona finished with 397 rushing yards on 68 attempts.
