Fort Collins, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - David Fales threw for 431 yards and three touchdowns to lead the San Jose State Spartans over the Colorado State Rams, 34-27, in a Mountain West Conference showdown at Hughes Stadium.

Lawson also led the rushing attack, carrying the ball 18 times for 98 yards and a TD as the Spartans won for the second time in as many games.

For the Rams (2-4, 0-1), losers of two of the last three, Garrett Grayson finished the day with a career-best 310 yards and three touchdowns and an interception on 19-of-34 passing. Crockett Gillmore caught five passes for 76 yards, while Kivon Cartwright grabbed three passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns. After the Spartans got on the board with a 26-yard field goal early in the first quarter, the Rams followed that with a seven-play, 68-yard scoring drive. Grayson connected with Gillmore from 15 yards out to give the home team a 7-3 lead midway through the first.

SJSU found the end zone in the opening minutes of the second quarter, needing only two plays as Fales combined with Lawson on an 83-yard touchdown pass to give the Spartans a 10-7 lead with 13:16 to play in the half.

After Jared Roberts knocked through a 27-yard field goal to tie the contest, the Rams added another touchdown with a big play of their own. Grayson found Cartwright for 50 yards, giving them a 17-10 lead with 2:30 remaining in the second frame.

The Spartans responded just 37 seconds later as Fales threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Jones, making the score 17-17.

The Rams capped off a wild second quarter by moving the ball 75 yards in under a minute, taking a 24-17 lead into halftime on a Grayson 35-yard touchdown pass to Cartwright.

Lawson ran for his second score of the day on a 18-yard carry with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter. The scoring run finished off a 13-play, 75- yard series that was the only scoring in the period and knotted the game at 24-24.

The teams traded field goals early in the fourth that left the contest tied with just under 11 minutes to play.

After an interception by the Spartan defense Fales struck with a big play, connecting with Winston for a 62-yard touchdown pass that provided the visitors with a 34-27 edge with 5:36 remaining in regulation. The Rams were forced to punt on their next possession and the Spartans were able to get a couple of first downs and run out the clock to secure the victory.

San Jose State converted 11-of-18 third downs while holding CSU to just 3- of-10 in that department. The Spartans also dominated time of possession, controlling the ball nearly 37 minutes to just 23 minutes for the Rams.
